Race in America: 5 Take-Aways From the 2010 Census

The Census Bureau has released its final figures for the 2010 count, revealing new details about the makeup of the 308.7 million people in the United States and how they live. Here are five insights about America's racial mix that emerge from the report: 1. The geography of race The minority population, driven by a 43 percent increase in Hispanics, grew in all four regions of the country. But it grew most in the West. Nearly half of the West's population of 33.9 million is now minority. That is largely due to California, which also has the largest minority population of any state: 22.3 ...

The Color of Legalized Pot? California's Prop 19 Ignites Intraracial Tension

(Oct. 26) -- We all know the stereotypes: Opponents of marijuana are people with short hair, khaki pants and light skin who like a good amount of mayonnaise on their white bread, and supporters are... pretty much everyone else. But in California, as everywhere else, the racial lines are blurry, and old stereotypes might prove a poor predictor of how the various populations in the nation's largest, most diverse state will vote when it comes to Proposition 19. As November draws near, there are increasing signs that race will play an important role in the upcoming vote on whether to legalize ...

E-mails Shed Light Vilsack's Decision to Oust Sherrod

WASHINGTON (Oct. 8) -- Former Agriculture Department employee Shirley Sherrod pleaded with officials to hear her out after she was ousted from the USDA during a racial firestorm in July, internal e-mails show. Sherrod's pleas reached Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack's e-mail soon after he ordered her dismissed from the department because of supposed racist remarks she made earlier in the year. He initially stuck by his decision despite her warnings that he didn't have the full story. Agriculture Department officials asked Sherrod to leave her job as Georgia's director of rural development ...

Only Whites 'Mourning in America'?

Only Whites 'Mourning in America'?

(Sept. 23) -- On its politics blog, The Caucus, The New York Times posted a new ad by Citizens for the Republic, a conservative lobbying group, called "Mourning in America." It's a play on a 1984 Ronald Reagan ad called "Morning in America." The Times reports: The ad is a blunt, almost point-by-point comparison to the hopeful, optimistic spot from Reagan's re-election year. "Morning in America" promoted the future, noting, "This afternoon, 6,500 young men and women will be married and with inflation at less than half of what it was just four years ago, they can look forward with confidence ...

Reactions to Dr. Laura Schlessinger's Retirement Over 'N-Word' Rant

(Aug. 18) -- "I want to regain my First Amendment rights. I want to be able to say what's on my mind and in my heart," Dr. Laura Schlessinger told Larry King on Tuesday with the announcement that she will retire after over 15 years in radio syndication. The decision comes in the aftermath of a controversy surrounding Dr. Laura's recent "N-word" rant posed at a caller to her radio show. If you are not up to speed on the story, here's a quick recap: Dr. Laura experienced a wave of criticism after using the "N-word" eleven times during a segment of her radio show ostensibly to illustrate how a ...

Will Dr. Laura Schlessinger Survive Her Racial Rant?

Will Dr. Laura Schlessinger Survive Her Racial Rant?

(Aug. 13) -- Dr. Laura Schlessinger would appreciate it if her remarks were taken in context. "Don't take things out of context. Don't double NAACP me," the conservative talk show host said on-air this week, after repeating the "N-word" more than 10 times during an uncomfortable exchange with a black caller. Later, though, Schlessinger decided she'd crossed the line. Or the trip wire, at least. "I was attempting to make a philosophical point, and I articulated the N-word all the way out -- more than one time," she said in an apology the next day. "And that was wrong. I'll say it again -- ...

Hallmark Pulls Card After Complaints of Racial Slur

Hallmark Pulls Card After Complaints of Racial Slur

(June 12) -- Hallmark has pulled one of its graduation cards off the shelves after the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People complained that it used racial stereotypes and contained an abusive slur aimed at black women. The card's micro speaker has two Hallmark characters, Hoops and Yoyo, bantering about how the graduate is going to dominate the universe. They tell the planets to "watch your back" and issue a stern warning to "ominous" black holes. That's where the NAACP got angry. They say that the audio sounds more like "black whores," and that card is ...
