New Forstmann Information to Test NCAA's Honesty, Backbone

New Forstmann Information to Test NCAA's Honesty, Backbone

This is getting harder and harder to sweep under the rug. The NCAA is going to have to see this not just as an inconvenience it can cover up, but instead as an open defiance. The man who has accused Ted Forstmann, CEO of IMG and one of the most powerful men in sports, of gambling on sports, now says this: Forstmann continued to bet on college sports even after IMG went into business with the NCAA, purchasing the company that made IMG a giant in college sports licensing and marketing. Until now, the timing has been the strength of the NCAA's coverup. Sure, Forstmann might have bet $170,000 ...

Novak Djokovic Isn't Your Typical Tennis Champion ... Thank Goodness

Novak Djokovic Isn't Your Typical Tennis Champion ... Thank Goodness

This is about how to be a tennis champion and pick up babes, Novak Djokovic style. It involves nipple tassels. Be prepared: It also involves a little granny-on-Novak action. A certain dignity is required of tennis champions. It must be. We've seen it forever. Djokovic doesn't have it, doesn't behave like any tennis champ we've seen before. I'll just say this ... Thank God. We've had cranky champs (John McEnroe), and flashy ones (Andre Agassi). Usually, just well-behaved ones who are a little stiff. When Djokovic won the Australian Open Sunday, I started replaying so many of his antics. A ...

Rafael Nadal Reportedly to Miss Time With Leg Injury

World No. 1 Rafael Nadal will need approximately 10 days to recover from the leg injury he suffered during his quarterfinal loss to compatriot David Ferrer at the Australian Open. Nadal's website reported that his MRI and ultrasound discovered an "adductor longus rupture of the right leg." Although the report on his website read the injury occurred to his right leg, Nadal was originally treated for a left leg injury during the match. His website also noted that he will be treated with non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, along with physical therapy. Doctors reportedly believe he should be ...

In 48 Hours, Tennis Turned on Its Head

In 48 Hours, Tennis Turned on Its Head

MELBOURNE, Australia -- The best transitions in sports happen naturally, and by process. A star player gets old, and the next guy slowly overtakes him and becomes the top dog. It happens with teams, too. And fans have a chance to adjust, get used to the new order. Tennis is in a transition stage, too. But on Wednesday, it wasn't. Things are happening a little too fast for tennis' own good. "From a personal point of view," Andy Murray said, "I would rather be in the final than watching Roger and Rafa at home, playing again." Murray had just beaten David Ferrer 4-6, 7-6 (7-2), 6-1, 7-6 (7-2) ...

Rod Laver, Last Man to Win Grand Slam, Responds to Rafael Nadal Losing

SAN DIEGO -- Tennis great Rod Laver, the last man to win the Grand Slam, was surprised to hear that Rafael Nadal's attempt to win the "Rafa Slam" was over. The injured Nadal lost in the Australian Open quarterfinals 6-4, 6-2, 6-3 Wednesday to fellow Spaniard David Ferrer at Rod Laver Arena in Melbourne. Nadal was trying to win his fourth straight Grand Slam tournament over two seasons. "That's disappointing for him, really," the 72-year-old Laver told The Associated Press from his home in Carlsbad in northern San Diego County. "In a way, that was an effort to put all those tournaments ...

Rafa Slammed, Hurt, Goes Down Fighting

Rafa Slammed, Hurt, Goes Down Fighting

MELBOURNE, Australia -- So history is lost. Rafael Nadal is out. Even he can't win on one leg. Nadal hurt his hamstring in the first few minutes, and then limped on, tried on, fought on. No way was he going to Cutler this thing. He couldn't push off on his serve, couldn't get anything into his shots, couldn't even run, really. He had no chance. But he fought on anyway. In the end, David Ferrer beat Nadal 6-4, 6-2, 6-3 in the Australian Open quarterfinals Wednesday. The Rafa Slam is gone. "I tried my best,'' Nadal said. "I couldn't do more.'' Because of the injury, right? "You know, for ...

Rafael Nadal Stunned by David Ferrer in Australian Open Quarters

Rafael Nadal's dream at the "Rafa Slam" came to a crashing halt on Wednesday night at the Australian Open. The top-seeded Spaniard lost to compatriot David Ferrer in straight sets 6-4, 6-2, 6-3, as Ferrer earned his first berth into the Australian Open semifinals. Nadal, who was treated with a medical ailment in the first set, suffered an apparent hamstring injury to his left leg early on in the match that hampered his play throughout the contest. For a majority of the match, Nadal grimaced in pain, lacked strength in his leg and moved poorly. However, even with Nadal's injury aside, Ferrer ...

Roger Federer's Willingness to Change Game Puts Him Back in the Fight

Roger Federer's Willingness to Change Game Puts Him Back in the Fight

MELBOURNE, Australia -- Roger Federer was becoming obsolete. Not only that, but he was in denial about it. It was the worst of combinations. The game was starting to blow right by him, and he was still insisting that his losses were from bad weather, tiny back pain, or whatever else he could think of to keep his greatness current. "People make it sound like I was just pushing the ball into play,'' Federer told me Tuesday after he crushed Stanislas Wawrinka 6-1, 6-3, 6-3 to advance to the semis of the Australian Open. "I don't think that's how anybody ever saw me play.'' Let's be real ...

Rafael Nadal Storms Into Australian Open Quarterfinals

MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) -- Rafael Nadal stormed past Croatia's Marin Cilic into the Australian Open quarter-finals Monday in his bid to unite the Grand Slam titles, as Andy Murray went through and Robin Soderling crashed. The world number one was in devastating touch against the 15th seed, who struggled throughout and double-faulted on match-point to go down 6-2, 6-4, 6-3 after 2hr 31min on a cool evening at Rod Laver Arena. Nadal, who caught a virus this month and sweated buckets in Saturday night's encounter with Australian teen Bernard Tomic, said he was now feeling "perfect" just three ...
