Islamophobia Today: Newspaper Apologizes, City Council Balks, Twitter Bungles Burqa Ban

(Sept. 14) -- Whether non-Muslim Americans are becoming more mistrustful of those who practice the Islamic faith, or whether media outlets have simply covered such instances to the point of making it seem that way, is, to be sure, a matter of opinion. From the divisive protests over the proposed construction of Park51 (the so-called "ground zero mosque"), to the threats by a Florida pastor to burn the Quran, a steady stream of stories has kept Americans debating the role that Islam should play in the mosaic of U.S. religious, political and public life. Tuesday was no exception, with three ...

Cardinals' Hamza Abdullah Comes Out of Ramadan Feeling Strong, Confident

It's been a long time since Arizona Cardinals safety Hamza Abdullah could take a break from the heat of a desert summer and slake his thirst during workouts with a visit to the water coolers around the Cardinals' workout field. Specifically, it's been a month -- the Islamic holy month of Ramadan, which started on Aug. 11. Friday for the first time in a month, the traditional fasting is over and Abdullah can join Muslims around the world eating and drinking during daylight hours. During Ramadan, those pleasures are passed over in celebration of the month in which the Prophet Mohammed is ...

Report: 10 Men Arrested for Eating at Restaurant During Ramadan

(Sept. 7) -- In some Muslim countries around the world, a daytime meeting at a restaurant during the holy month of Ramadan can prove a risky activity. Ten men have been detained in Algeria for eating in public during daytime hours, the Jerusalem Post reports. The men were arrested at a restaurant in Bejaya province, east of the capital city of Algiers. According to the Post, neighbors had complained to authorities. According to the lawyer of the restaurant's owner, who was one of those arrested, the men sat inside with the curtains closed and were not served any food. During Ramadan, ...

Obama Voices Support for Mosque Near Ground Zero in Call for Tolerance

President Barack Obama, marking the Muslim holiday of Ramadan, for the first time voiced support for the mosque near Ground Zero, in a White House speech Friday appealing for religious tolerance and respect. Obama prefaced his support for the project by acknowledging objections to its construction a few blocks from the World Trade Center site. "I understand the emotions that this issue engenders," he said. "Ground Zero is, indeed, hallowed ground." But Obama was firm and unwavering in his belief that the project -- a community center with an on-site mosque -- should go ahead as planned. In ...

President Obama Supports 'Ground Zero Mosque'

(Aug. 13) -- President Barack Obama gave a thumbs up today to a proposed Islamic community center and mosque that is slated to be built two blocks from the site of the 9/11 attacks in lower Manhattan. "Let me be clear," Obama said at a White House dinner celebrating the Islamic holy month of Ramadan, "as a citizen, and as president, I believe that Muslims have the same right to practice their religion as anyone else in this country. "That includes the right to build a place of worship and a community center on private property in lower Manhattan, in accordance with local laws and ...

At Ramadan, Obama Hails Islam As 'Part Of America'

As opinion polls registered strong opposition to plans for an Islamic center near Ground Zero, President Obama on Wednesday issued a statement marking the start of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan, calling the holiday "a reminder that Islam has always been part of America and that American Muslims have made extraordinary contributions to our country." Obama said Ramadan is a time "when Muslims around the world reflect upon the wisdom and guidance that comes with faith, and the responsibility that human beings have to one another, and to God." He noted Ramadan's call for prayer and ...

Ramadan in the Digital Age: From iPhone Apps to Web Porn Censorship

(Aug. 11) -- With the Muslim holy month of Ramadan under way, technology continues to play a bigger role in the observances of the holiday. Below, the latest ways that the digital era is helping facilitate Ramadan's ancient rituals, which call for abstaining from food, water and sexual activities from sunup until sundown until Sept. 9 of this year. There's an app for that Observance of Ramadan requires knowing when to pray (it depends on the worshipper's location) and then making sure to pray in the direction of Mecca. A bevy of iPhone apps like the Ramadan Daily Dua, iPray and iQuran have ...

How Saudi Arabia's Enormous Ramadan Clock Clocks In Across Time

(Aug. 11) -- It's that time of year again: the holy month of Ramadan, when observant Muslims fast, pray frequently and abstain from alcohol and sex from dawn till sunset. Only this year, the season of humility, which began Wednesday, is being marked by a very ostentatious display. At least in Saudi Arabia, where the world's largest clock tower -- the Royal Mecca -- is set to begin ticking to life. Some Muslims view the Royal Mecca as an important step toward resetting the world's clocks away from the Western-centric Coordinated Universal Time (which since 1972 has been the same as Greenwich ...

Congressional Ramadan Snub Was Idiotic

Congressional Ramadan Snub Was Idiotic

The last thing that the U.S. Congress needs to do is offend Muslims, which is why the 42 House Republicans and one Democrat who voted "present" on a resolution recognizing Tuesday's start of the Ramadan ought to be ashamed of themselves. How can any sane member of Congress oppose a resolution which according to The Hill: "[commended] Muslims in the United States and across the globe who have privately and publicly rejected interpretations and movements of Islam that justify and encourage hatred, violence and terror"? ...
