Click here to visit the new home of Politics Daily!Congress isn't in session this week, but that didn't stop anti-abortion protesters from blocking the hallway outside of the Capitol Hill office of House Speaker John Boehner. Boehner (R-Ohio) wasn't there, and the six demonstrators were arrested and charged with unlawful assembly, the Associated Press reported. The protest was meant to pressure Republican leaders to stick with the $317 million defunding of Planned Parenthood that was part of the $61 billion spending reduction included last week in a House-approved budget bill. Operation Rescue founder Randall Terry is all over the news now because of his heinous statement on the murder of Dr. George Tiller:George Tiller was a mass-murderer. We grieve for him that he did not have time to properly prepare his soul to face God. I am more concerned that the Obama Administration will use Tiller's killing to intimidate pro-lifers into surrendering our most effective rhetoric and actions. Abortion is still murder. And we still must call abortion by its proper name; murder. This put me in mind of my first encounter with Terry. It was in Denver, at the Democratic convention. ...
The graduation ceremony at the University of Notre Dame was, ultimately, about the graduates. The majority of the students, parents, friends and relatives cheered long and loud when President Barack Obama praised their selfless efforts for others and their maturity in handling the circus that their special day almost became. ...
As a supporter of President Obama and a Notre Dame alumna, my question is: What was accomplished by this graduation hijacking? A group of anti-abortion extremists from outside of the university used the graduation convocation as an event for staging protests against the president's position on abortion. Like a PETA stunt, this form of activism caused embarrassment and discomfort to its target and generated much media attention. But what, if anything, will be different once Randall Terry goes home? ...
As I reported earlier, Caleb and I spent a lot of time yesterday baking in the sun and following the "Re-Create '68" protest. It was anything but recreational. We shot a ton of video, and I'm going to share it with you here, but due to the long processing and uploading times, it will have to be a slow-ish rollout. Keep checking this story today as I add content from yesterday. Here's a little taste. Sometimes, the urge to fire off a joke just completely overwhelms me. I'm not sure if that's a good thing, but it worked out well in this case. Note which of the protesters had a sense of humor. ...
Day One of my trip to Denver was starting to look like kind of a bust. Caleb Howe and I spent most of the day being lost, late, or looking for parking. We went to the media party at Elitch Gardens, an amusement park, but didn't see anyone we recognized. I don't like rollercoasters or other barf-inducers, so aside from hanging out with AOL people, it was kind of a disappointment. But then, on our way to the car, we saw this guy yelling into a megaphone, asking us to do a story about surviving fetuses. See, he knew that we were journalists trying to have a nice time, and thought he'd play editor.I ...
