AP Top 25: Duke Unanimous No. 1

AP Top 25: Duke Unanimous No. 1

Once again, Duke is atop the AP Top 25 poll. The Blue Devils succeeded in a tough week, taking down No. 7 Michigan State and last year's national runner-up, Butler. Thus, they received every No. 1 vote in the nation. With none of last week's top-5 teams losing a game, the entire group -- Ohio State, Pittsburgh, Kansas and Kansas State -- stayed in the same order as well. The highest riser of the week was Georgetown, as the Hoyas used a victory over Missouri to propel themselves seven spots to No. 9. Missouri fell six spots to No. 15. But the biggest fallers of the week were Kentucky and ...

Holy Cities, Holistic Bodies: Men's Health Ranks Religious Hot Spots

Holy Cities, Holistic Bodies: Men's Health Ranks Religious Hot Spots

The popular magazine Men's Health is best known for its glossy cover shots of guys with six-pack abs and features on diets and workouts so that you, too, can look like Mark Wahlberg (this month's pin-up), as well as advice on keeping your prostate healthy and your sex drive turbocharged. So when the latest edition hit the newsstands this week with a piece called "Holy Hometowns," it made some readers sit up a little straighter in their office chairs, and not just to strengthen their abdominal core. The unusual feature was part of the magazine's regular "Metrogrades" rankings of various ...

Week 11 IDP Rankings: Linebackers

Week 11 IDP Rankings: Linebackers

Last season, Stephen Tulloch wasn't an every-down linebacker for the Titans, but he still racked up 121 tackles. This season, the relentless middle linebacker is staying on the field in nickel and dime packages, making him among the most coveted IDP starters in fantasy land. Tulloch started off the season with 13 tackles in his first couple games, about average for an LB2, but has since tallied 75 stops in his last seven games, putting him on pace for over 150 on the season. It's nice to have studs like James Harrison and DeMarcus Ware bolstering your stats with multi-sack games and assorted ...

Week 6 IDP Rankings: Defensive Linemen

Week 6 IDP Rankings: Defensive Linemen

There are a few injury issues that I'll get to after the rankings, but aside from a couple of glitchy performances by some fringe defensive ends, there's not much dramatic news to report this week on the linemen front. Falcons DE Kroy Biermann, who returned an interception 41 yards for a TD, and Bears DE Israel Idonije (four solos, 2.5 sacks) had huge games, but they don't stand much chance repeating those performances this season. Idonije is worth a look in deeper formats that start two defensive linemen, and Biermann is also a sleeper, but neither can be trusted on a regular basis. IDP ...

Week 5 IDP Rankings: Defensive Backs

Week 5 IDP Rankings: Defensive Backs

Last week, my top 30 included eight of the top 16 scoring defensive backs -- an impressive accomplishment given the subjective quality of scoring among DBs. Here are my rankings for Week 5: Week 5 IDP Rankings: Defensive Backs | Linebackers | Defensive Linemen More Position Rankings: QB | RB | WR | TE | D/ST | K Bernard Pollard, HOU (vs. NYG) Tyvon Branch, OAK (vs. SD) Michael Griffin, TEN (at DAL) LaRon Landry, WAS (vs. GB) Charles Woodson, GB (at WAS) Adrian Wilson, ARI (vs. NO) Dawan Landry, BAL (vs. DEN) Brian Dawkins, DEN (at BAL) Louis Delmas, DET (vs. STL) DeAngelo Hall, WAS (vs. ...

Week 4 IDP Rankings: Linebackers

Week 4 IDP Rankings: Linebackers

With the first of seven bye weeks upon us, it's important to make efficient moves with your IDP roster. A few recommendations before we get to the rankings: • Plan ahead. If you see that you're going to be down two LBs in Week 6, then make sure you don't have similar conundrums with your offensive players. There's nothing worse than heading into gameday with a roster full of BYEs, and then having to scour the free agent pool for a last-minute fill-in. • Trade, dude. The best way to avoid dropping players outright and letting another owner pounce is by trading, especially ...

Week 4 IDP Rankings: Defensive Backs

Week 4 IDP Rankings: Defensive Backs

It's a passing league, ladies and gentlemen, so there are many fantasy points to be harvested in the secondary. Last week we saw some huge games from DBs who eluded the majority of owners on draft day, including Seahawks rookie free safety Earl Thomas, Panthers strong safety Charles Godfrey (pictured right), and Colts nickel back Jacob Lacey. But just a few fantasy points removed were IDP mainstays Bernard Pollard, Antoine Winfield, Kerry Rhodes, Leon Hall and Patrick Chung. A few weeks in, I'm starting to have a better idea of where the consistent performers belong in relation to defensive ...

Trinidad and Tobago's New Prime Minister Is a She -- Another Step Forward for Women

Trinidad and Tobago's New Prime Minister Is a She -- Another Step Forward for Women

A woman became prime minister of Trinidad and Tobago Wednesday, a first in that country. Kamla Persad-Bissessar's party, the People's Partnership, ousted incumbent Patrick Manning in Monday's election in the Caribbean nation. This first leads us to ponder the numbers and progress of women as political leaders in the world -- and in the United States. Here's a look at some of the numbers: 23 nations or independent states are ruled by women, according to the Worldwide Guide to Women in Leadership. 10 countries have women presidents: Argentina, Costa Rica, Finland, India, Ireland, ...

There Are Some Overrated Teams in the Preseason Top 25 Rankings

There Are Some Overrated Teams in the Preseason Top 25 Rankings

There always are, of course. The trick is figuring out who is the obvious flop. Pregame.com looked at the ESPN Coaches Poll and flagged five worthies.1)LSU (#6)2)Clemson (#9)3)Texas (#10)4)Wisconsin (#12)5)Illinois (#19)I'll quibble about LSU, but otherwise these are some great choices. The further Texas gets from the Vince Young years, the more it looks like Mack Brown has taken the program to a solid but uninspiring place. They've got talent everywhere and a veteran quarterback and some nice runners, but nothing screams "look out for these guys". Particularly in a loaded Big 12, this is a ...

The AP Preseason College Football Top 25 Rankings Are Out

The AP Preseason College Football Top 25 Rankings Are Out

No surprise, USC is #1 to start the season. I consider the AP poll a bit more reliable than the USA Today/Coaches poll, so it's interesting to see Florida dropped from third in the coaches to sixth with the press. Everything else is fairly similar. This is the preseason we're talking about, remember.Teams who finished the 2006 season unranked but earned mention in this year's first poll: #14 UCLA, #19 Florida State, #20 Nebraska, #23 Hawaii and #25 Texas A&M.Last five in? Arkansas (last year's SEC runner-up), TCU, Hawaii, Boise State (last year's WAC champs) and Texas A&M.Almost made the cut: ...
