Man Accused of Raping Woman at Denver Airport

DENVER - The rape of a woman at Denver International Airport has left family members raising questions about the late-night attack and officials defending security at the Rocky Mountain hub, which serves millions of travelers each year. Police spokesman Sonny Jackson said Wednesday that violent crime is rare at the airport, and that he knows of one other alleged sexual assault there, which he said involved an airport worker attacking another employee in an area not accessible to the public. An airport spokeswoman seconded Jackson's comments, telling The Denver Post that "something like this ...

New Push in Fight Against Sexual Violence on Campus

Months after she was raped in her dorm room during her freshman year at Kansas State University, Madeleine Lietz heard a rumor. The man who raped her, also a Kansas State University student, had finally been expelled -- not for sexual assault, but because he had simply failed his classes and flunked out. In an account some fear is common among survivors of sexual assault at the nation's colleges and universities, Lietz said her school's reaction -- or non-reaction -- to her rape was akin to a second trauma in itself. "I was given little to no help after the assault. The issue -- the ...

Did NY Times Get Rape Coverage Right the Second Time Around?

When an 11-year-old girl said she was raped multiple times by more than a dozen men in an abandoned trailer in Texas, the story made national headlines. Just how the story of her alleged rape should be told, however, has proved to be an explosive issue, one that has exposed critical fault lines in the way society thinks about rape and the way journalists write about it. Much of the controversy has centered on The New York Times. The newspaper's first take on the disturbing crime provoked outrage from critics who said the Times seemed to be blaming the victim for her own rape. The first ...

Loophole Means Utah Sex Offender May Go Free

PROVO, Utah -- Prosecutors in Utah are fighting to have a convicted sex offender facing multiple child sex abuse charges committed indefinitely after doctors deemed him no danger to society but mentally incompetent for trial, meaning he could soon see the case against him dropped and be set free. They won at least a temporary reprieve late Wednesday when a judge ordered a civil commitment hearing for Friday for Lonnie Hyrum Johnson, 38. Johnson faces nearly two dozen charges of child sex abuse. He has been held at Utah State Hospital in Provo, about 45 miles north of Salt Lake City, since ...

'It Is a Lie!' Ex-Israeli President Yells After Getting 7 Years for Rape

JERUSALEM -- An Israeli court today sentenced former President Moshe Katsav to seven years for rape and sexual assault, making him the highest-level official in the state of Israel to be sent to prison. Katsav was also ordered to pay fines of about $25,000 and $7,000 to two of his victims. The scene in court was dramatic. At first impassive, the 65-year-old Katsav, with his trademark silver hair, burst into tears and sobs when the judge announced his sentence. He also directed his anger at the court. "You made a mistake," he shouted at the judges. "It is a lie! The girls know it is ...
