Opinion: It's Time to Move On From Reagan

Opinion: It's Time to Move On From Reagan

I was a writer in Ronald Reagan's re-election campaign in 1984, a fact I usually don't mention until I get, say, two sentences into conversation with anyone I meet. I only met the president once in a grip-and-grin reception for staff. But because of my role, however minor, in the success of the greatest chief executive of my lifetime, I will be among those heartily celebrating the centennial of his birth. And then I will exhort my fellow Republicans to move on. This sentiment isn't fashionable right now, as the Great Communicator is more admired than ever. GOP leaders extol his bold tax and ...

Reagan Remembered: It Can Be Done

Reagan Remembered: It Can Be Done

When I think of Ronald Reagan, I remember a natural leader -- someone who inspired me with his belief that our best days are still ahead and his confidence in the indomitable spirit of the American people. Before Reagan was elected president, the country was demoralized, adrift and staring into an economic abyss. I remember because I was running a small business at the time. A sea of red tape, high taxes and crippling inflation were plaguing families and job creators alike with uncertainty. During one of his signature radio addresses, the Gipper offered a simple solution. He asked, "Why ...

Covering Ronald Reagan: Up Close, but Not Personal

Covering Ronald Reagan: Up Close, but Not Personal

Scenes from eight years of trying to figure out the most elusive personality I ever covered in politics: November 1979, aboard a maiden flight of Ronald Reagan's chartered campaign plane sometime after his announcement in New York that he was running for president. Reporters from several prestigious national publications are on board, in addition to the "regulars" who had been assigned to the campaign for the duration. Several have scored interviews with the candidate and, one by one, each is ushered to the front of the plane for a strictly timed 20-minute visit. As the first Titan of ...

Reagan Remembered: A Democrat at Ronald Reagan's Inaugural

Reagan Remembered: A Democrat at Ronald Reagan's Inaugural

Ronald Reagan's first inauguration as president in 1981 had Californians in a tizzy, especially Republicans. But Democrats, too, as I can attest. As a Californian, I hotfooted it over to my only well-connected Republican friend and begged for tickets to the Kennedy Center California Ball and the candlelight dinner. I got the tickets, but I was warned that there wasn't a chance in hell of getting a glimpse of the man of the hour. "Pat, you have to be a big-money Republican to get near either Ronald or Nancy at this event. A Democrat like you doesn't stand a chance." "Let's make a bet," I ...

Photo Slide Show: State of the Union Guests, From Reagan's Era to Obama's

Nearly every State of the Union address since Ronald Reagan has featured special guests acknowledged during the speech for their extraordinary achievements or importance to the nation. Tonight's address will be no exception. To provide a better sense of how this tradition began and how it continues to evolve, here are photos of a few of those who have been honored at the State of the Union (with a hat tip to this list at The American Presidency project). Michael Reagan Rips Half-Brother Ron Over Book and Alzheimer's Claim

Michael Reagan Rips Half-Brother Ron Over Book and Alzheimer's Claim

Michael Reagan blasted as "falsehoods and lies and conspiracy theories to sell books," the suggestion by half-brother Ron Reagan that their father may have had Alzheimer's disease while still in the White House. "In order for that that happen, you would have to have doctors, the Secret Service and other family members all part of the same conspiracy," he told Politics Daily. Reagan's diagnosis of Alzheimer's was not announced publicly until 1994, five years after he left office. Michael ripped the excerpt from Ron's book, "My Father at 100," that appears in Sunday's Parade magazine. Ron Jr. ...

Only Whites 'Mourning in America'?

By  Paul Wachter - AOL News
Only Whites 'Mourning in America'?

(Sept. 23) -- On its politics blog, The Caucus, The New York Times posted a new ad by Citizens for the Republic, a conservative lobbying group, called "Mourning in America." It's a play on a 1984 Ronald Reagan ad called "Morning in America." The Times reports: The ad is a blunt, almost point-by-point comparison to the hopeful, optimistic spot from Reagan's re-election year. "Morning in America" promoted the future, noting, "This afternoon, 6,500 young men and women will be married and with inflation at less than half of what it was just four years ago, they can look forward with confidence ...
