Gabrielle Giffords Speaking, Lip-Syncing Songs

By  Mara Gay - AOL News
Gabrielle Giffords Speaking, Lip-Syncing Songs

Gabrielle Giffords is rapidly regaining her ability to speak, mouthing the words to song lyrics and beginning to talk in complete sentences, according to her family and staff. Just a month after being shot in the head at point-blank range in an assassination attempt, Arizona Rep. Gabrielle Giffords was even able to speak over the phone to her astronaut brother-in-law in space. "Hi, I'm good," Giffords told Scott Kelly, according to The New York Times. Doctors have said the fast pace of the congresswoman's progress is important and is a sign that she will likely be high-functioning, if not ...

Judging Mark Kelly: Gabrielle Giffords Would Want Him to Fly the Shuttle

Judging Mark Kelly: Gabrielle Giffords Would Want Him to Fly the Shuttle

Give him some credit. Give her some credit. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, shot in the head on Jan. 8 in Tucson, Arizona, has made so much progress in a Houston rehabilitation center that her husband, astronaut Mark Kelly, decided to leave his wife's side and join his crew aboard the space shuttle Endeavour, scheduled to launch in April. And here come the critics, right on time: Mark Kelly is selfish, he's ego-driven, he cares more about his career than he does his wife. How can he even think of abandoning her in her fragile state? Hey, people! Mark Kelly is going back to work, like thousands of ...

Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, the State of the Union, and the Empty Chair

Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, the State of the Union, and the Empty Chair

On display during the State of the Union speech was the vacant chair that would have been occupied by Ariz. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, who could not attend because she was in a hospital recovering from a bullet wound to the head. Recuperation could take as long as a year. The empty chair got to everyone, myself included. What got to me even more was the photograph of her husband, Mark Kelly, holding her hand in the hospital as the couple watched the speech on television. I could imagine what might be on the left side of that cropped photo. Nine years ago I lay in a hospital bed with a ...

NASA Names Backup Commander for Mark Kelly's Shuttle Mission

NASA today named a backup commander for an upcoming space shuttle mission due to be helmed by Mark Kelly so he can attend to his wife, Arizona congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, as she recovers from last weekend's shooting rampage in Tucson. Kelly remains commander of the STS-134 mission, which is due to blast off in April from NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida. Astronaut Rick Sturckow will serve as backup commander to facilitate training for crew and support teams, NASA said in a statement. Handout / MCT Capt. Stocks Hit Highest Level Since Lehman Bros. Bankruptcy

Stocks Hit Highest Level Since Lehman Bros. Bankruptcy

(Nov. 4) -- Are the bulls back? The Dow Jones industrial average today rose to its highest level since Lehman Brothers Holdings Inc. filed for bankruptcy in 2008, at the height of the U.S. financial crisis, The Wall Street Journal reports. U.S. stocks rose by 219 points, or 2 percent of total volume, in trading at the New York Stock Exchange. That jump followed Wednesday's announcement that the Federal Reserve said it would buy $600 billion in U.S. Treasury securities to help stimulate the lackluster economy, AOL News reported. The stock market gains also come as a slew of corporate ...

Obama Seeks Small Biz Aid as Recovery Inches Along

Obama Seeks Small Biz Aid as Recovery Inches Along

(Oct. 29) -- American economic growth picked up over the summer but not enough to substantially improve the jobs market, and President Barack Obama used the news to push a program aimed at getting small businesses to hire and invest. U.S. gross domestic product, the broadest measure of goods and services produced within the country, grew at an annual rate of 2 percent in the third quarter, up from a 1.7 percent pace in the spring, the Commerce Department said today. Consumer spending -- by far the most important engine of U.S. economic growth -- also grew faster and more rapidly than it has ...

Why Hasn't the Economy Recovered Yet?

Why Hasn't the Economy Recovered Yet?

(Sept. 13) -- In the current issue of the New York Review of Books, there's a good primer on the roots of the 2008 economic crises and explanations for its lingering impact by Robin Wells and Paul Krugman. While the United States and Europe have, for now, avoided a Great Depression-like crash and GDP is rising again, other indicators are not as reassuring. The writers point out: Yet unemployment has hardly fallen in either the United States or Europe -- which means that the plight of the unemployed, especially in America with its minimal safety net, has grown steadily worse as benefits run ...

Rains Hamper Pakistan Crash Recovery

Rains Hamper Pakistan Crash Recovery

(July 29) -- Monsoon rains are hampering efforts to retrieve all 152 bodies from the wreckage of a downed airliner on a muddy hillside near Pakistan's capital, as the country observes a national day of mourning today for victims of its worst plane crash in history. The Airbus 321, leased to the private Pakistani carrier Airblue, crashed Wednesday in the Margalla Hills outside Islamabad, about two hours after taking off from the port city of Karachi. All 146 passengers, including two Americans, and six crew members are believed to have perished. Some 115 bodies have been recovered from the ...
