As The New York Times reports, federal agencies trying to remake the government's vast regulatory system are "grappling with a subject that is more the province of poets and philosophers than bureaucrats: What is the value of a human life?" Bill Pugliano, Getty Images Federal agencies, such as the Transportation Department, put a value on human life to determine how much to spend to prevent a single death. The government needs to know so it can determine how much it should spend to ...
President Obama has proposed a "review of government regulations" to reduce the regulatory burden on businesses. While I think he has good intentions, creating a group of bureaucrats to review government red tape is like asking a group of prisoners to review prison security. Those doing the review are, most likely, part of the problem. Those of us in the business world feel a deep skepticism when the government tries to help us. Until there is a true philosophical change in Washington, business will be seen as a competitor for government power rather than an engine for economic growth. Scott ...
In this age of trillion-dollar budgets, deficits and stimulus packages, taxes and spending get all the press. But while the $3.5 trillion federal budget and $1 trillion deficit are important, they don't tell the whole story of government's size and scope. To fill out the picture, we need to add another very important trillion: the $1.75 trillion cost of federal regulation. President Barack Obama brought attention to that forgotten issue this week by signing an executive order, "Improving Regulation and Regulatory Review." It will initiate a "government-wide review of the rules already on the ...
(Aug. 6) -- The recent disappointing gross domestic product numbers showing an abnormally sluggish recovery cause me to ask: Where is the "can do" America in which I grew up and where we got back on our feet quickly after downturns? Is it being drenched by nanny-state rules that dictate just about everything we can do or buy these days? Consider: • New federal standards prohibit the sale of rain head and multi-jet showers in an effort to conserve water . • In my community, there's an effort to drastically limit -- and require the removal of existing -- outdoor lighting on ...
(June 9) -- It's been said that as much as half of the general population uses some type of "sports" supplement, and that among college athletes in the U.S. the number climbs to more than two-thirds (some studies report as high as 88 percent). With the plethora of products heavily marketed and readily available, from fluid-replacement beverages, endurance drinks and energy bars to muscle-building protein powders, shakes and pills, this is undeniably a booming enterprise. Add to that multivitamins, herbals, botanicals, minerals, amino acids and other categories that make up the dietary ...

Let's swing it back around to Sarah, now. Shall we? While we may never hear her in a debate or answer another substantive question, we can reflect on this. (h/t HuffPo)In her interview with CBS News anchor Katie Couric, Governor Palin appeared to be unable to come up with a single thing that John McCain has done in 26 years of Senate work to help with regulating the financial markets that are today spiraling out of control:COURIC: You've said, quote, "John McCain will reform the way Wall Street does business." Other than supporting stricter regulations of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac two years ...
Sen. Barack Obama has been trying to tie rival Sen. John McCain to the financial misdealings on Wall St., saying that McCain is a long-time opponent of increased regulation, which Obama says is responsible for the turmoil in the nation's investments sector. But in what is becoming a daily occurrence for his campaign, Sen. Obama went too far in taking a quote from McCain out of context in an effort to make his point, and has been called on it. Obama claims that McCain is not being genuine in his calls for increased regulation of financial institutions, pointing to a months-old quote from McCain ...
The Environmental Protection Agency is expected to announce today that it will not issue new regulations for greenhouse gas em missions this year, delaying action on the issue until the next Administration takes office. Last year, the Supreme Court ruled that the EPA must regulate carbon dioxide under the Clean Air Act, or provide a good reason for not regulating it. The EPA argued that it did not have the authority under the act to regulate carbon dioxide partly because the gas is a ubiquitous substance, and not simply a product of emissions from factories and power plants. The EPA denied that ...
