Click here to visit the new home of Politics Daily! After a week of Charlie Sheen madly ranting and raving to anyone who would listen (which added up to a substantial crowd), Warner Brothers Television announced Monday afternoon that despite a wildly successful seven and a half seasons, it has terminated the star of "Two and a Half Men" their top-rated show, "effective immediately." Maybe now he will get medical help. I've tried to avert my eyes from the train wreck that has become Charlie Sheen's faster-than-a-locomotive life, but a story on the front page of The New York Times business section on the TV and film industry culture Monday ...
Give him some credit. Give her some credit. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, shot in the head on Jan. 8 in Tucson, Arizona, has made so much progress in a Houston rehabilitation center that her husband, astronaut Mark Kelly, decided to leave his wife's side and join his crew aboard the space shuttle Endeavour, scheduled to launch in April. And here come the critics, right on time: Mark Kelly is selfish, he's ego-driven, he cares more about his career than he does his wife. How can he even think of abandoning her in her fragile state? Hey, people! Mark Kelly is going back to work, like thousands of ...
Sad news for Backstreet Boys fans. Singer A.J. McLean is checking himself into rehab for the third time in an effort to beat his addiction to drugs and alcohol. The announcement comes as the Boys -- who formed in 1993 -- are preparing for a nostalgia-filled summer tour with boy-band statesmen New Kids on the Block. In a statement released to People, McLean said that his treatment would not impact the NKOTBSB tour. "With 2011 being a busy year for Backstreet, I want to be healthy and perform and sing for people at my very best and happiest," he wrote. "None of this will affect our current ...
For many people, the tale of how homeless guy Ted Williams was discovered and given a chance to enjoy fame and fortune has been inspirational. One person who was inspired was actress Vicki Lawrence, who found Williams' saga the perfect opportunity for satire using her famous "Mama" character that she introduced nearly 40 years ago on "The Carol Burnett Show." Lawrence, 61, recently filmed a video dressed as "Mama" and declaring herself to be homeless because she sees it as a career move -- and she provided an early glimpse of this effort in a special preview for AOL News. "I have ...
My colleague Mary C. Curtis writes that Betty Draper has returned to the therapist office. "Mad Men" is set in the 1960s, and there's a good chance Draper's health insurance picked up 80 percent of that tab, if not the whole shebang. Ah, those were the days. Now, you're more likely to get three visits a year. That is, if you're still employed and even have insurance at all. With real unemployment soaring near levels last seen in the 1930s, I doubt people will be able to pay the premiums offered by private companies. (Public Option, was it something I said?) My colleague Delia writes about ...
Status in Washington, D.C., is based on power and access to power, which leads to wealth and media fame. Rarely in this town do those who have power or access to power turn down the ensuing wealth or fame. Malika Saada-Saar is one of those selfless few. Saada-Saar is the founder and executive director of the Rebecca Project for Human Rights, a non-partisan, non-profit which advocates for public policy reform and justice on behalf of women on the margins of society -- the poor, the addicted, the victims of abuse and domestic violence, and especially those in prison. Saada-Saar has effectively ...
Rep. Patrick Kennedy (D-RI), a veteran congressman and son of Sen. Ted Kennedy (D-MA), announced today that he will be away from Congress while he seeks additional help in his recovery from addiction. ...
Update: Shockey was treated for dehydration and was released from the hospital "in good shape," according to an ESPN report.According to a TMZ report, Jeremy Shockey was taken from the Hard Rock Hotel in Las Vegas to a local hospital after being found unconscious at Rehab, the Hard Rock's pool party on Sundays. As TMZ noted, this is a "developing story" and it's entirely possible that the situation isn't as bad as it initially seems.
