About 1,200 mourners filled a hall to overflowing, with many standing outside a gate, for a ceremony organized by 170 priests in the northeastern town of Soma, where much of the coast remains buried in mountains of debris from the March 11 earthquake and tsunami. Many carried framed photographs of lost loved ones, and wept. Some clutched wooden tablets containing ...
CAIRO -- Archaeologists unearthed one of the largest statues found to date of a powerful ancient Egyptian pharaoh at his mortuary temple in the southern city of Luxor, the country's antiquities authority announced Tuesday. JAKARTA, Indonesia -- Senior security minister Djoko Suyanto said he believed Islamic militants had been plotting an attack outside of the capital during Good Friday celebrations. "The army and police are under high alert," he told reporters after attending a meeting chaired by President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono. "We want to guarantee safety." Indonesia, the world's most populous Muslim nation, was thrust onto the front lines in the battle against extremists in 2002 after al-Qaida-linked militants attacked two nightclubs on Bali island, killing 202 people, many of them foreign ...
AJDABIYA, Libya - Abdel-Moneim Mokhtar was ambushed and killed by Moammar Gadhafi's troops last week on a dusty road in eastern Libya - the end of a journey that saw him fight as a jihadi in Afghanistan and then return home where he died alongside NATO-backed rebels trying to oust the longtime authoritarian leader. In describing Mokhtar's death on Friday, Gadhafi's government said he was a member of al-Qaida - part of an ongoing attempt to link the rebels to Osama bin Laden's group. Four years ago, al-Qaida said it had allied itself with the Libyan Islamic Fighters Group - of which Mokhtar ...
DUBLIN -- A judge cleared the way Friday for Ireland to publish a new report into decades of Catholic Church cover-ups of child abuse - and how a Cork bishop kept crimes in his diocese secret long after the Irish church issued orders to start telling police. Dublin High Court Justice Nicholas Kearns ruled that only one chapter out of 27 in the upcoming Cork report required temporary censorship, because its subject is a priest about to face a criminal trial for rape and indecent assault. He said that chapter might be published as soon as July. Ireland's Justice Department, which sought the ...
MULTAN, Pakistan -- His accomplices brought carnage to a Sufi shrine, but the 14-year-old suicide bomber who was captured after his explosives failed to detonate was unrepentant. "Let me go, I want to be a martyr," he said as he was being led away, according to police officer Khalid Mahmood. "I want to send all you policemen to hell!" The boy, identified as Fida Hussain, was arrested at the shrine in central Pakistan shortly after Sunday's twin suicide blasts, which killed 42 people and wounded 100 others. The complex close to Dera Ghazi Khan in central Pakistan was crowded with thousands of ...
RALEIGH, N.C. - What does hell mean to you? Is it an endless nightmare for sinners and unsaved souls, as mainstream Christianity has taught for centuries? Or is hell here on Earth, in the distractions, addictions and emptiness of daily life? Those ideas are receiving fresh scrutiny from some believers after a prominent evangelical pastor questioned the traditional idea of hell in his new book, "Love Wins." Even before Rob Bell's book was published this month, religious leaders and their followers were branding it heresy, hailing it as a breakthrough or landing somewhere in the middle. ...
DURHAM, N.C. -- When Chad Holtz lost his old belief in hell, he also lost his job. The pastor of a rural United Methodist church in North Carolina wrote a note on his Facebook page supporting a new book by Rob Bell, a prominent young evangelical pastor and critic of the traditional view of hell as a place of eternal torment for billions of damned souls. Two days later, Holtz was told complaints from church members prompted his dismissal from Marrow's Chapel in Henderson. "I think justice comes and judgment will happen, but I don't think that means an eternity of torment," Holtz said. "But I ...

A debate over prayer and its place in Minnesota's state Legislature is heating up at the Capitol and it's Minnetonka's own state senator, Terri Bonoff who is at the heart of the fight. Sen. Bonoff (DFL-Minnetonka) said on Tuesday that she wants it to be not only a standard policy, but also an enforced rule, that any prayer said in the Senate chamber be non-denominational in nature. "We have a policy at the Minnesota Senate that says the prayers must be non-denominational [and] I want to make sure that it's crystal clear," she told Minnetonka Patch on Tuesday. The move comes less than ...
