Boston Cardinal Answers Critics of Kennedy Funeral

    By  David Gibson

Boston Cardinal Sean O'Malley quietly absorbed a lot of criticism from the right for presiding at last Saturday's funeral for Sen. Edward M. Kennedy because of Kennedy's longstanding support for abortion rights. Throughout the service it was unclear what O'Malley was thinking or how he was feeling about the episode, though some conservative critics tried to read into his solemn visage a distaste for the task at hand. But in an unusually direct response to those views and his critics, O'Malley wrote in a blog post Wednesday night that he disagreed "in the strongest terms" with those who ...

    Kennedy Memoir: Chappaquiddick Actions 'Inexcusable'

    By  Cliff Foster

The late Sen. Edward Kennedy expressed remorse over the death of Mary Jo Kopechne, said he accepted the findings of the Warren Commission, and told Bill Clinton he would stand by him after the former president confessed to his affair with Monica Lewinsky, according to Kennedy's soon-to-be released memoir. The New York Times obtained a copy of the 532-page book, "True Compass," scheduled to be published Sept. 14. In it, Kennedy, who died Aug. 25 at age 77, talked about his battle against the brain cancer that claimed his life and his "self-destructive drinking." Among other issues cited by ...

Ted Kennedy's Letter to Pope Benedict: Angling for an Amicus Brief to St. Peter

    By  Melinda Henneberger
    %PostTitle%

Ted Kennedy must have known that even on the occasion of his death, vast armies of armchair St. Peters would carry on arguing that the gates of Heaven should be slammed shut on his fingers -- fearless as ever in their willingness to test whether Jesus really meant that "with the judgment you pronounce you will be judged, and with the measure you use it will be measured to you.'' Far more surprising, however, was the senator's evocative and extraordinary deathbed letter to Pope Benedict XVI, written earlier this summer and hand-delivered by President Obama last month. In it, Kennedy mounted ...

Edward M. Kennedy: A Lion is Laid to Rest

    By  Carl M. Cannon
    %PostTitle%

At eight p.m. under a setting August sun, Edward Kennedy joined his brothers John and Robert at rest in Arlington National Cemetery. In that hallowed place, the flame burns eternally, as it does in the hearts of the millions who loved him. Their hope now is that the great American senator, orator, icon, politician, and patriarch will find his reward with the angels, and that his legacy – his tireless work to make this mortal vale better for the least among us – will outshine and outlast his shortcomings and sins. ...

Ted Kennedy to Pope Benedict: 'I am writing with deep humility...'

    By  David Gibson
    %PostTitle%

As if Ted Kennedy didn't have enough Catholic mojo going his way after today's funeral mass in Boston, the burial at Arlington this evening held another surprise: The contents of a moving exchange of letters between Kennedy and Pope Benedict XVI -- correspondence that touched on Kennedy's deep faith as well as public policy battles including abortion and universal health care. It was known that Kennedy had written a personal letter to the pontiff, and had President Obama carry it to the pope when Obama visited the Vatican in July. But the contents of the letter were unknown, and it was ...

Edward Kennedy: His Funeral and Busy Afterlife

    By  David Gibson
    %PostTitle%

Teddy Kennedy was memorialized at a solemn funeral Mass on Saturday in Boston in a service reminiscent of the way Kennedy spent his days on Earth: bringing together disparate elements of the America's political and social worlds, flummoxing his foes and inspiring his more numerous admirers – and, albeit through surrogates this time, tirelessly working the room on behalf of his latest legislative project. This was a "Catholic" event in both the uppercase and lowercase sense of the word--a grand religious ritual that matched or exceeded anything even in the storied history of the Boston ...

FULL TEXT: Barack Obama's Eulogy for Sen. Edward Kennedy

    By  Patricia Murphy

Below is the full text of Barack Obama's eulogy for Senator Edward Kennedy: Your Eminence, Vicki, Kara, Edward, Patrick, Curran, Caroline, members of the Kennedy family, distinguished guests, and fellow citizens: Today we say goodbye to the youngest child of Rose and Joseph Kennedy. The world will long remember their son Edward as the heir to a weighty legacy; a champion for those who had none; the soul of the Democratic Party; and the lion of the United States Senate -- a man who graces nearly 1,000 laws, and who penned more than 300 laws himself. But those of us who loved him, and ache ...

    By  Emily Miller
    %PostTitle%

Sen. Ted Kennedy's $8 million memoir, "True Compass," is being rushed for release on Sept. 14. The publisher, Hachette Book Group, plans to send 1.5 million copies to bookstores. According to pre-release orders by online booksellers, the Kennedy book is already a bestseller. "True Compass" was originally slated for publication in 2010. Hachette moved up the release date to this October after Kennedy was diagnosed with inoperable brain cancer. Three weeks ago, the publisher decided to again move up publication to mid-September. The manuscript was only just completed "earlier this summer," a ...

    By  Lynn Sweet
    %PostTitle%

The strands of Sen. Ted Kennedy's political and personal life will be knitted together during a Friday night tribute at the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum, with the final speaker Caroline Kennedy, the daughter of the slain president. Meanwhile, the family is keeping the public up to date on Kennedy's farewell on a Twitter account. On Friday, the public continued to stream past Kennedy's flag-draped casket at the JFK Memorial. As I write this, at 10 a.m., a Kennedy twitter (@kennedynews) has recently noted, "Mass. Treasurer Tim Cahill in line. State house and senate arrive ...
