Israel Unleashes Gold Rush for Solar Power

JERUSALEM (Nov. 27) -- The race is on to tap into a potential $20 billion solar energy bonanza in Israel's southern wilderness that could transform the nation into the first in the world to power its electric grids through renewable energy. The starting gun sounded Sunday with the signing of a historic agreement between the Israel Electric Corp. and a solar energy producer based on Kibbutz Ketura, a tiny collective farm in the barren Arava desert on the Israel-Jordan border. For years, Israel has been exporting its cutting-edge solar technology for use abroad, but it has never been applied at ...

Peak Oil Is Here: What Should We Do?

Peak Oil Is Here: What Should We Do?

(Oct. 7) -- The Association for the Study of Peak Oil and Gas made a dire prediction today. The world has been extracting oil from the earth for just 150 years, but "peak oil," the point at which fuel production will begin to decrease while demand continues to increase, has finally come. "We are at the point of no return," said Jim Baldauf, ASPO-USA president. "Without affordable energy to drive our economy, we can expect price spikes and economic crisis to be the new normal. The debate about peak oil is over; it is time for bold action. If we do not change our current approach, we will see ...

World's Largest Wind Farm Opens Off Coast of England

(Sept. 24) -- The world's largest offshore wind farm has opened off England's southeast coast, stretching the length of more than 4,000 football fields in a bid to boost Britain's renewable energy. The Thanet Offshore Wind Farm has 100 turbines each 380 feet tall, which will together be able to generate electricity to cover the needs of more than 200,000 homes, the Swedish company that built the facility, Vattenfall, said in a statement on its website. The idea is that wind funnels through the English Channel, gaining strength before it hits the North Sea turbines at full force, it said. ...

Obama Says No to Solar Panels on White House Roof

(Sept. 14) -- The Obama administration has nixed the idea of reinstalling solar panels on the White House roof. Some 32 solar panels were first installed on the executive mansion's roof by then President Jimmy Carter as part of his efforts to tout clean, renewable energy during the 1970s, when the U.S. faced severe shortages and price spikes after an oil embargo by Arab countries. Carter held a rooftop news conference in 1979 to show off the panels and discourage reliance on foreign oil. Renewable-Energy Capacity Booming Worldwide

Renewable-Energy Capacity Booming Worldwide

(July 28) -- The year 2009 was "unprecedented" in the history of renewable-energy production, with China adding more capacity than any other country in the world, according to two new reports from the United Nations Environmental Program and the Renewable Energy Network for the 21st Century (REN21). The U.N. report states that for the second year running, the U.S. and Europe added more energy capacity coming from renewable sources like the sun and wind than from conventional coal, gas or nuclear plants. And as that trend spreads to the developing world, it's likely that this year or next, ...

Solar Plane Attempts Crucial Night Flight

ZURICH, Switzerland (July 7) -- A solar-powered plane is attempting a key flight test in the skies of Switzerland, with its inventors saying it could set a milestone for flying around the world using only the clean and renewable energy of the sun. The carbon fiber Solar Impulse prototype, with the 262-foot wingspan of an Airbus A340 and the weight of a middle-sized car, took off shortly before 7 a.m. today from the Payerne airbase with a solo pilot at the controls, the Solar Impulse team said. The plan is to have the aircraft up in the air throughout the day to allow its 12,000 solar ...

Obama Offers Funds for Solar Projects, Vows Not to Back Down in Jobs Fight

Vowing that he "won't back down" in the struggle to boost the economic recovery, President Obama announced Saturday the award of nearly $2 billion in recovery act funds to two companies involved in job-creating solar energy projects. Obama, in his weekly address, called for an "all-hands-on-deck effort" to keep digging out from a recession that is still shedding jobs -- 125,000 last month, driven by the layoffs of temporary government Census workers. The private sector produced 83,000 jobs in June and Obama clearly want to build on that. The "conditional commitments" of recovery money are ...

Wind Farm off Cape Cod Gets Go-Ahead From Obama Administration

A contoversial wind farm in Nantucket Sound offshore from Cape Cod has been granted government approval to generate renewable energy from the breezes blowing along the coastline. In Boston, Interior Secretary Ken Salazar said the 130-turbine Cape Wind project marked the "beginning of a new direction in our nation's energy future," the Associated Press reported Wednesday. Cape Wind expects to be generating power by 2012 and eventually provide 75 percent of the power to Cape Cod, Mass. But opponents of the project vowed to fight on. Members of the Aquinnah Wampanoag Tribe on nearby Martha's ...

Surge of Enthusiasm Greets US Offshore Power Study

(April 5) -- A new wind is blowing in, stirring up the scientific, media and business communities with its powerful implications for the U.S. energy supply: limitless, renewable, clean electricity that's capable of powering the entire Eastern Seaboard. But where, exactly, would it all come from? Right off the East Coast, according to scientists. That's where some 11 weather-monitoring stations are stretched out across 1,550 miles from Maine to Florida. At present, they're just collecting meteorological data, but imagine if each one had an electricity-generating wind turbine and all were ...
