Wave of Anti-Abortion Bills Advance in the States

NEW YORK -- Dozens of bills are advancing through statehouses nationwide that would put an array of new obstacles - legal, financial and psychological - in the paths of women seeking abortions. The tactics vary: mandatory sonograms and anti-abortion counseling, sweeping limits on insurance coverage, bans on abortions after 20 weeks of pregnancy. To abortion-rights activists, they add up to the biggest political threat since the Roe v. Wade decision of 1973 that legalized abortion nationwide. South Dakota Governor Signs Controversial Abortion Bill

PIERRE, S.D. - South Dakota Gov. Dennis Daugaard signed a law Tuesday requiring women to wait three days after meeting with a doctor to have an abortion, the longest waiting period in the nation. Abortion rights groups have already said they plan to file a lawsuit challenging the measure, which also requires women to undergo counseling at pregnancy help centers that discourage abortions. Daugaard, who gave no interviews after signing the bill, said in a written statement that he has conferred with state attorneys who will defend the law in court and a sponsor who has pledged private money to ...

Opinion: Defund Planned Parenthood

Planned Parenthood has been misleading Congress and American taxpayers for many years. I know -- I was part of the deception. For eight years I worked at a Planned Parenthood clinic in Texas, and for two of those years I was the clinic's director. Here are the ways Planned Parenthood is deceiving the public -- and taxpayers -- about what it does. Deception No. 1: Taxpayer funds don't go to pay for abortions. This defies common sense and basic logic; of course taxpayer money helps to finance abortions at Planned Parenthood clinics. Other Views on Planned ...

Opinion: The GOP's Dangerous Attack on Planned Parenthood

In 1916, one woman's strength, determination and conviction helped open the door for hundreds of millions of women worldwide to plan their own pregnancies. As a nation, we have made great strides since Margaret Sanger opened that first family planning clinic in New York City nine decades ago, and Planned Parenthood is still at the forefront of the fight for reproductive health and rights for all women. Our services provide a lifeline for 3 million people every year. One in five American women receives care from a Planned Parenthood health center at some point in her life, and 90 percent of ...

From New York to Midwest to South, Abortion Battle Heats Up

NEW YORK -- It was only a single billboard, raised high above the streets of Manhattan, with a photograph of a black little girl and the kind of message the city's residents don't often see: "The most dangerous place for an African-American is in the womb." The ad was sponsored by a Texas-based anti-abortion group, which said there is a particularly high abortion rate among black women and that it wanted to show them there are other options. The billboard sparked outrage and allegations of racism in liberal New York City. It was removed by the advertising company less than a week after it was ...

Women: Pa. Abortions Left Us Sterile, Near Death

PHILADELPHIA -- When Davida Johnson walked into Dr. Kermit Gosnell's clinic to get an abortion in 2001, she saw what she described as dazed women sitting in dirty, bloodstained recliners. As the abortion got under way, she had a change of heart - but claims she was forced by the doctor to continue. "I said, 'I don't want to do this,' and he smacked me. They tied my hands and arms down and gave me more medication," Johnson told The Associated Press. Johnson, then 21, had a 3-year-old daughter when she became pregnant again. She said she first went to Planned Parenthood in downtown ...

Opinion Roundup: Abortion Clinic 'House of Horrors' Sparks Debate

In a gruesomely detailed case, abortion doctor Kermit Gosnell was charged Wednesday with murdering a woman and seven fully-delivered babies in his West Philadelphia clinic. From the Atlantic Wire The clinic was described by prosecutors as a "house of horrors" with bags of aborted fetuses "scattered throughout the ...

Spain's Supreme Court to Examine Abortion Law

Spain's Supreme Court to Examine Abortion Law

(June 30) -- Just days before Spain's new liberal abortion law was to go into effect, the country's highest court has agreed to hear a challenge to its constitutionality from the opposition conservative Popular Party. The law , a key piece in the ruling Socialists' efforts to modernize Spain's social laws, removes all restrictions on abortions up to the 14th week of pregnancy. Sandra Moneo, a Popular Party member of parliament, says the law "violates the balance between the rights of the mother and the rights of the unborn," according to Canadian Press. The new law's most controversial ...

Feeling Like a New Woman? That's Evolution

Evolution isn't quite done with us yet, according to researchers from Yale University. As reported in The New Scientist, a recent study of more than 2,200 women in Massachusetts indicates that while advances in health care may have pushed "survival of the fittest" towards extinction, differences in reproduction rates are still nudging human DNA into new directions. So, who is this new woman? According to researchers, she's a little bit shorter, a couple pounds heavier, has supremely good blood pressure and -- most interestingly -- she has a longer time frame in which to have children. Of ...
