Click here to visit the new home of Politics Daily! On the eve of Ronald Reagan's election as president of the United States in 1980, a radio reporter asked him what it was that Americans saw in him. Reagan hesitated and then replied: "Would you laugh if I told you that I think maybe they see themselves and that I'm one of them?" Thirty years and four presidents later, Americans still see themselves in Reagan. In a Gallup poll in 2009 they ranked Reagan as the best president, just ahead of Abraham Lincoln and John F. Kennedy. This highly generous assessment is based on more than likeability. Reagan left the world safer and the United ...

(Sept. 23) -- The GOP unveiled a new "Contract with America," sorry, scratch that, "Pledge to America," today, attempting to articulate to voters what Republicans would do differently, specifically, if they were in charge of Congress. Of course, the new document was designed to echo Newt Gingrich's seminal 1994 document, "The Contract with America," which is widely credited with helping usher in a 12-year Republican Congressional majority. Although Republicans were already favored to make big gains when voters go to the polls for the midterm elections on November 2, it is unclear how much ...
Tampa, Fla., has been picked as the site for the 2012 Republican National Convention, which will nominate the party's candidate for president. The Republican National Committee announced Wednesday that its selection team voted to recommend Tampa following a months-long search. After terms are hammered out with the city, the full RNC will vote on the recommendation in August. "The Tampa area boasts state-of-the-art facilities, exciting and vibrant downtowns, and a clear enthusiasm from the community to host our convention. We look forward to joining our compatriots in the Sunshine State for ...
Lisa Kline, the New York-based stylist who dressed the Palin family for their national debut at the Republican National Convention last year, tells the New York Times that Palin is telling the truth when she says in her memoir that she never participated in any shopping sprees. Kline got the call about making Palin over for the convention only three days before it began, and, after she arrived, was also asked to dress the rest of the family. She says she bought most of the clothes at Saks Fifth Avenue in New York and Neiman Marcus in Minneapolis. Kline's story of the last 24 hours before the ...
From The Windup is FanHouse's daily, extended look at a particular portion of America's pastime.I don't know if you've been paying attention, but there are some things going on in this country right now that are far more important than whether or not the Cubs will win the World Series, or whether New York will collapse on itself should the Yankees miss the playoffs. No, I'm not talking about the new Beverly Hills 90210 - though it's nice to see Lori Loughlin getting work - I'm talking about the upcoming election for President of the United States. Yeah, you've probably noticed in the last few ...
What can you say? He is who he is. And if anyone is wondering if he can come close to soaring oratory of Obama or the directness of Sarah Palin, the answer to that is no.But first the prelims, and let me ask, what the hell the GOP is thinking? Tom Ridge? Lindsey Graham? Surely they could have spared one guy from the A squad last night to warm up the crowd for McCain: a Romney, Giuliani, or even Huckabee would have worked wonders here. With Cindy McCain's intro, let me just say it did nothing to convince me that the tradition shouldn't be shot ASAP. Unless the plan was to make McCain look good ...
The Associated Press:That audience rivaled the one for Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama last week. Nielsen Media Research estimated 37.2 million people watched Palin on either ABC, CBS, NBC, CNN, Fox News Channel or MSNBC. PBS estimated it had four million viewers for the speech.Last week Obama had 38.4 million viewers on the commercial networks, topping 40 million with PBS and C-SPAN added in.... Viewers were far more interested in Palin than Democratic vice presidential candidate Joe Biden. Biden's speech to Democrats last week was seen by an estimated 24 million people. I ...
Republicans, Now with More Booze! That might well be the slogan for this summer's Republican National Convention in Minneapolis. How else to explain the following:In a proposal being considered in the Minnesota House, the last call for alcohol would be pushed back two hours from the usual 2 a.m. for all establishments within a 10-mile radius of the convention site......The change, which would last roughly 11 days and require suspending a state law, would also allow liquor sales on Sundays.Strangely, however, when I visited the RNC's convention website, there wasn't a handy list of watering ...
