Geithner Confident Congress Will Raise Debt Limit

WASHINGTON - Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner says Republican leaders have privately assured the Obama administration that Congress will raise the government's borrowing limit in time to prevent an unprecedented default on the nation's debt. But a top Republican quickly pushed back Sunday and said there was no guarantee the GOP would agree to increase the $14.3 trillion debt ceiling without further controls on federal spending. Possible Deal Near as Shutdown Deadline Approaches

WASHINGTON -- Perilously close to a government shutdown, the White House and congressional leaders closed in on a possible deal to cut tens of billions of dollars in federal spending and avert the closure, officials said Friday night. House Republican leaders summoned their rank and file to a late night meeting for what aides said would be an update on the talks. Democrats said they were reviewing the details of a possible tentative agreement. The developments unfolded as the administration readied hundreds of thousands of furlough notices for federal workers and warned that federal ...

Senate to Vote to Repeal Part of Obama's Health Law

WASHINGTON - Congress is poised to send the White House its first rollback of last year's health care law, a bipartisan repeal of a burdensome tax reporting requirement that's widely unpopular with businesses. Even President Barack Obama is eager to see it gone. The Senate is scheduled to vote on the bill Tuesday. Republicans hope it is the first of many such bills, resulting in the entire health care law being scrapped. Democrats say the bill is part of an inevitable tinkering that will be needed to improve the health measure. The bill, which passed the House last month, would rescind a tax ...

Fight Over Wisconsin Union Law Heads to Court

MADISON, Wis. -- With Republican Gov. Scott Walker's administration insisting a new law eliminating most of state workers' collective bargaining rights had gone into effect and other state and municipal leaders disputing that, many were looking to a Tuesday court hearing for some kind of clarity. The latest over the collective bargaining law began Friday when the nonpartisan Legislative Reference Bureau published the law by posting it on a website, and Walker said that was all that was needed for it to take effect. Typically, a law goes into effect when it's published by the secretary of ...

Wisconsin Governor Signs Bargaining Bill, but Wider Political War Looming

Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker on Friday signed a controversial bill sharply limiting collective bargaining rights for public workers, but it will take months, maybe years, to sort out the winners and losers. Walker, a Republican who sought changes limiting the clout of unions, also rescinded the layoffs of 1,500 mid-level state employees who were threatened with job losses because of a budget crunch and a stalemate on the bargaining bill, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported. Walker said the reforms, which also demand larger pension and health care contributions from workers, will save $30 ...

RIP Jane Russell: Lifelong Republican and Straight Shooter

RIP Jane Russell: Lifelong Republican and Straight Shooter

I met Jane Russell once. It was in my hometown, Pine Bluff, Ark., a faded Southern place that hosted a film festival in hopes of raising enough money to restore the Saenger Theater, a once palatial movie house. Each year, the festival invited former famous starlets – Tippi Hedren, Carol Channing, Shirley Jones, Celeste Holm – to talk about Hollywood's Golden Age. In 2002, Russell came to town. Statuesque, with silver hair and a still-to-be-envied figure, Russell possessed no celebrity air about her. She talked like a good old Western gal who had seen a lot, and done a lot, but no ...

GOP Governors Undermine Obama's Agenda in States

GOP Governors Undermine Obama's Agenda in States

WASHINGTON -- Their ranks swollen after the last election, Republican governors from Florida to Alaska are undermining President Barack Obama's agenda at every turn ahead of the Democrat's 2012 re-election campaign. Some are rejecting federal money for high-speed rail. Many are fighting the president's health care law. And several are going after the Democratic Party's bedrock constituency, pushing laws that would weaken the power of unions. Not that any Republican governor will acknowledge that this is politics at play - even if it is. "Republican governors are doing what they said they ...

GOP Candidate Would Tie Obama in 2012, Poll Finds

GOP Candidate Would Tie Obama in 2012, Poll Finds

Voters are as likely to support the GOP candidate -- whomever that may be -- as they are President Obama in 2012, according to a new survey out Wednesday. The Gallup poll found 45 percent of respondents said they would vote for Obama for a second term, compared with 45 percent saying they'd back "the Republican Party's candidate." The numbers were similar to the results for the same question when it was asked a year ago, according to Gallup. While Obama enjoyed wide support from women and nonwhites in 2008, the same might not be true in 2012. Gallup found a majority of whites favor the GOP ...
