The Faster You Walk, the Longer You'll Live, Study Finds

Good news for speed walkers: The speed of one's stride may be correlated to that individual's longevity, according to a new study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association. After gathering data on more than 34,000 senior citizens who participated in nine separate studies, researchers at the University of Pittsburgh found that every 0.2 miles an hour of increased walking speed in seniors is correlated to a 12 percent rise in survival rate. "It's a real part of the human experience to see that when someone slows down with age, they may not be doing as well as they once ...

Bones May Show Amelia Earhart Lived as a Castaway

(Dec. 17) -- The enduring mystery about what happened to Amelia Earhart may be a step closer to finally being solved: A group dedicated to discovering the aviator's fate says it has found three bone fragments that may belong to her. If their identity is confirmed, the bones would appear to indicate that after disappearing during an attempted circumnavigation of the globe in 1937, Earhart may have survived for weeks as a castaway on a remote and uninhabited island in the South Pacific. AP / TIGHAR This bone, possibly from a human finger, was found by researchers on ...

Math Proof Bolsters Theory of Evolution, Researchers Say

(Dec. 14) --Change happens... ...often more quickly than one can imagine. Two University of Pennsylvania professors say their new reserach undercuts a longstanding critique of Charles Darwin's Theory of Evloution. Herbert Wilf, emeritus professor of mathematics, and Warren Ewens, emeritus professor of biology, say that they have created a new mathematical model that directly disproves the notion that "evolution couldn't have happened because the small changes in species outlined by the theory simply would have taken too much time to be completed." In their paper, which is titled "There's ...

Time to Get Out of the Pool? Contaminants May Lead to Bladder Cancer, Study Says

Swimming -- an exercise that improves your health -- may also have a downside. A new study suggests that swimming in indoor chlorinated pools may lead to bladder cancer. The study, just published online in Environmental Health Perspectives, a highly-regarded, peer-reviewed government journal, found that people who swam just 40 minutes a day were exposed to sufficient levels of disinfection by-products (DBPs) to cause damage to the DNA that may develop into cancer. People with a type of gene found in one quarter of the population were most vulnerable. "Nobody should stop swimming because of ...

Bat Fellatio, Whale Snot Research Honored at Ig Nobel Awards

(Sept. 30) -- Every day of the year, scientists try to solve life's riddles, like how to use a remote control helicopter to retrieve whale snot, and whether or not swearing actually relieves pain. One night of the year, the science world comes together to honor the men and women seeking the answers to these difficult -- and yes, funny -- questions. The researchers responsible for this year's weirdest science gathered tonight at Harvard University for the "Ig Nobel Prize" ceremony, where top honors were handed out to 10 lucky winners from around the world. Steven Senne, AP Dr. Elena Bodnar, ...

World's Wackiest Minds Celebrated at 'Ig Nobel Prize' Ceremony

(Sept. 30) -- If you discover the structure of DNA or you bring an end to apartheid, you win a Nobel Prize. If you invent a bra that can be converted into two gas masks or discover that giant panda feces can be used to reduce kitchen waste, then your best bet is an Ig Nobel Prize. Ever since 1991, the science world has gathered once a year to honor its wackiest, strangest and oddest endeavors in a celebration perennially dubbed the First Annual Ig Nobel Prize ceremony. Experts will gather tonight at Harvard University to award 10 new prizes for research that has both scientific value -- and ...

Paid Consultants Often Don't Disclose Financial Ties in Medical Journals

(Sept. 14) -- A plague on the medical report? In yet another example of the disconcerting relationship between medical experts and the health care industry, a major new study has concluded that the majority of doctors failed to divulge important monetary compensation when writing in medical journals. Writing in the Archives of Internal Medicine (itself "a bimonthly professional medical journal"), researchers from Columbia University warned of "inadequate transparency produced by current disclosure practices" invoked by numerous other medical publications. They evaluated 32 medical doctors or ...

Fruit Fly Gene Could Unlock the Mysteries of Human Memory

Fruit Fly Gene Could Unlock the Mysteries of Human Memory

(Sept. 10) -- A breakthrough finding in the common fruit fly could help explain how humans learn and remember -- or why some suffer from conditions that limit both capacities. A team of Scripps Research Institute scientists, funded by the National Institutes of Health, used a cutting-edge method, developed in their own lab, to target and manipulate specific brain cells within the Drosophila, better known as a fruit fly. They found one gene, known as gish, whose mutations are responsible for "olfactory sensory learning" -- the link between odors and short-term memories. "This is the first ...

Brazil and UFOs: Making Sure the Truth Is Out There

Brazil and UFOs: Making Sure the Truth Is Out There

(Aug. 12) -- Fed up with secrecy shrouding reports of flying saucers, Brazil has decreed that any UFO sightings will now be logged by the government and made available to researchers of the paranormal. A government decree issued this week orders Brazilian military and civilian pilots, as well as air traffic controllers, to register any sightings with the country's aerospace defense command -- and to include any video or photos if they have them. A list of sightings will also be kept in the national archives in Rio de Janeiro, and made available to anyone seeking evidence of extraterrestrial ...

U.S. Treasury to Increase Electronic Transactions, Reduce Paper Use

The U.S. Treasury Department announced Monday that it plans to dramatically increase electronic transactions that involve the Treasury, and will save $400 million and 12 million pounds of paper in the next five years. "Treasury must lead the way in developing methods to deliver payments that are safe and secure in a manner that is efficient and reliable," Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner said in a statement. "By moving to all-electronic payments, Treasury will save hundreds of millions of dollars and substantially reduce our environmental impact, making this a win-win for all Americans." ...
