Click here to visit the new home of Politics Daily! To win elections, politicians often seek maximum exposure. But when it comes to stripping from the waist up, only a select few dare to flash some flesh. Rep. Chris Lee of New York abruptly resigned from office after this photo emerged. The married 46-year-old Republican had sent it to a woman he met through the Internet, describing himself as a 39-year-old divorced lobbyist. Philandering aside, the photo itself shouldn't be considered too controversial. When it comes to showing some skin, many leaders have no qualms, especially in Hawaii. ...
Even Doctor Zhivago wants Egypt's president to resign. Egypt's most famous actor, Omar Sharif, told a French radio station today that President Hosni Mubarak "should have resigned." His comments come amid weeklong protests against Mubarak's generation-long autocratic rule. "Given that the entire Egyptian people don't want him and he's been in power for 30 years, that's enough," Sharif, 78, said by telephone from his home in Cairo. He was speaking to France Inter radio, and the report was picked up by Reuters. Andrew H Walker / Getty Images Actor Omar Sharif, seen here in December ...
(Nov. 15) -- Virginia Thomas, the wife of Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas, reportedly is resigning as the head of the conservative group she founded earlier this year. The Washington Post reports that recent "distractions" led Thomas to step down from her position at Liberty Central, a conservative advocacy group she launched in May. Charles Dharapak, AP Virginia Thomas is reportedly stepping down as head of conservative advocacy group Liberty Central. WASHINGTON (Oct. 8) -- Former Agriculture Department employee Shirley Sherrod pleaded with officials to hear her out after she was ousted from the USDA during a racial firestorm in July, internal e-mails show. Sherrod's pleas reached Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack's e-mail soon after he ordered her dismissed from the department because of supposed racist remarks she made earlier in the year. He initially stuck by his decision despite her warnings that he didn't have the full story. Agriculture Department officials asked Sherrod to leave her job as Georgia's director of rural development ...
(Oct. 1) -- It's Rahm time. In a move that surprised no one, President Barack Obama announced today that the White House chief of staff for the past two years, Rahm Emanuel, would be stepping down, effective immediately, to pursue his longtime dream of running for mayor of Chicago. The parting of ways was "bittersweet," as the president put it in a midmorning press conference, flanked by a visibly emotional Emanuel. "It's fair to say that we could not have accomplished what we've accomplished without Rahm's leadership," Obama said "From preventing a second Depression to passing ...
(Aug. 12) -- The Vatican has decided not to accept the resignations of two Irish bishops in the wake of a report that found widespread sexual abuse in the Dublin diocese boys' institutions, setting off a storm of complaints. Eamonn Walsh and Raymond Field announced their decisions to quit in December, saying that by doing so they hoped to bring "peace and reconciliation" to the victims. The two were auxiliary bishops in Dublin when a report issued in November by the Murphy Commission found that sexual abuse of boys was "endemic," but that the perpetrators had been protected by the Roman ...
Citing an unnamed source, Time magazine's Joe Klein reported on CNN that Gen. Stanley McChrystal, the U.S. military commander in Afghanistan, has officially offered his resignation to President Barack Obama. CBS News later confirmed that McChrystal offered Obama a letter of resignation, and ABC's Jake Tapper reports that Obama will meet with McChrystal on Wednesday before deciding the general's fate. McChrystal finds himself in hot water after criticizing Obama and several members of his administration in an interview with Rolling Stone magazine over their handling of the Afghan war ...
(June 2) -- One was known as the "alien," the other as the "shadow shogun" who wielded real power from behind the scenes. The abrupt resignations today of the first, Japanese Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama, and the second -- ruling Democratic Party of Japan secretary-general Ichiro Ozawa -- has abruptly shifted the political landscape in the world's second largest economy. Analysts say the exit of the two men -- both dogged by political funding scandals -- would boost the Democratic Party of Japan's image ahead of elections expected July 11. And it could revitalize the party's push for ...
(March 5) - Rep. Eric Massa (D-N.Y.) announced Friday that he will resign from Congress Monday afternoon, rather than at the end of the congressional session as he had previously intended. When he first declared his intention to retire at the end of 2010, Massa explained that a cancer scare had led to his unexpected decision to leave Congress after just one term. But by Thursday, the House Ethics Committee confirmed that it had opened an investigation into allegations that the congressman made unwelcome advances toward male staff members. ...
