Sirhan Sirhan Denied Parole: 5 Facts on the RFK Assassin

Sirhan Sirhan is staying put. The 66-year-old convicted felon, who's serving a life sentence for the June 4, 1968, assassination of presidential hopeful Robert F. Kennedy, was denied parole on Wednesday. Sirhan pleaded with the parole board during an intense four-hour hearing at California's Pleasant Valley State Prison, but the committee determined that Sirhan still had not shown adequate remorse for the crime. For more on the man serving time, Surge Desk has five facts on the killer. 1. Born in Jerusalem Sirhan was born March 19, 1944, to a Jordanian Christian family. He was 12 years old ...

Presidential Pilot Remembers Flights Both Fancy and Fraught With Danger

He sits on a couch thumbing through a photo album. "Here's Dwight Eisenhower," he says. "And LBJ, Gerald Ford, Leonid Brezhnev and Walter Cronkite." Famed Army One helicopter pilot, Retired Master Army Aviator Lt. Col. Gene Boyer, is glancing over the images that defined his life. He stops and recalls, wistfully, what it was like to get to know John Steinbeck during the Vietnam War. He was amazing, Boyer told AOL News during a recent interview. "The great Steinbeck. And just look what he wrote about us helicopter pilots." Chris Epting Helicopter pilot Lt. Col. Gene Boyer -- who ...

Several Members of Congress Have Been Assassinated

By  Andrea Stone - AOL News
Several Members of Congress Have Been Assassinated

Rep. Gabrielle Giffords is not the first Congress member to face a violent attack. Some have even lost their lives. The last to be killed was Rep. Leo Ryan of San Francisco. The Democrat was leading a delegation investigating an American religious cult in Jonestown, Guyana, when it was ambushed on Nov. 18, 1978. He and four others were killed. Rep. Jackie Speier, a Democrat who now represents Ryan's district, was an aide on the trip and survived being shot five times. She called Giffords "a very talented, rising star in the Congress" who was "attacked while engaging in one of the most basic ...

Ted Kennedy FBI Files: Ted and Sirhan Sirhan

Today the FBI released over 2,000 pages of material on the late Massachusetts Senator Ted Kennedy. The files -- which span nearly 30 years of the senator's political and personal history -- can be downloaded here. I'll be reading the whole pile, with an keen eye for interesting political and historical nuggets. If you think there's something I'm overlooking, you can e-mail me at byrontau@aol.com. Up first: Robert Kennedy's assassin Sirhan Sirhan was not a fan of the Kennedy family and may have tried to get a fellow prisoner to try to assassinate Ted as well. According to a short entry in ...

The Kennedy Brothers: Rest in Peace

The Kennedy Brothers: Rest in Peace

It took 46 years, but the three youngest Kennedy brothers are united again, the first anniversary since that horrifying November day in Dallas that they have rested in the same hallowed ground. It is often said that Americans of all ages remember where they were on November 22, 1963, that grim Friday when President Kennedy and the dream of Camelot were taken from us. Five years later, in a hotel lobby in Los Angeles, Bobby was cut down, an unthinkable sequel to us; a nightmare to a clan that had already lost its oldest son, Joseph P. Kennedy Jr., in World War II. ...

Hang Out With Oprah for a Good Cause

Hang Out With Oprah for a Good Cause

The economy may be tight, but when a worthy cause like the nonprofit Robert F. Kennedy Center for Justice & Human Rights has a charity auction, you do what you can. Like the Sidwell Friends School auction last month, where one happy donor making a contribution to the private school's scholarship fund was able to score autographed magazine covers of the President and First Lady for under $4000, this auction's items are laden with prestige and star power. Now through May 28, donors can "bid on over 125 one of a kind celebrity experiences to support human rights!" Lot items offer high power ...
