Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan gave the Peace Museum a chance -- and now she wants John Lennon's guitar back. The state's top prosecutor sued the small and financially troubled Chicago museum in Cook County Court on Feb. 8 to turn over an acoustic guitar that belonged to the former Beatle and all other artifacts from the peace-loving institution. "The Peace Museum's property is in need of charitable protection," the lawsuit alleged, because the museum has gone belly up and hasn't even staged an exhibit since 2004. Rock and Roll Hall of Fame guitarist Chuck Berry was forced to cut a performance short on New Year's Day after falling ill during the show. Berry began to falter midway through his set at Chicago's Congress Theater, during which audience members reportedly witnessed the guitarist lean his head on his keyboardist's piano before he was escorted off stage for a paramedic's examination. Berry reportedly did not lose consciousness. After receiving medical attention for about 20 minutes, Berry returned to the stage to thank audience members who had remained even though an announcement had been ...
(Dec. 15) -- Alice Cooper Band, Neil Diamond, and Tom Waits lead an impressive Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee class of 2011. The Cleveland-based institution released its full class of 2011 on Wednesday morning, which also includes Phil Spector favorite Darlene Love, Elektra Records founder Jac Holzman, New Orleans legend Dr. John, Specialty Records founder Art Rupe, and the "master of space and time" Leon Russell. As always, the snubs seem just as debatable as the winners. New Jersey's "The Star Ledger" quickly pointed out that hometown heroes and 2011 nominee Bon Jovi didn't make the ...
(July 12) -- Mark Mothersbaugh is telling a story so bizarre that it sounds more like the setup to a joke rather than an actual event he experienced over 20 years ago. It starts like this: a new wave singer, a recently naked TV hostess with large breasts, Michael Jackson and Andy Warhol walk into Studio 54 on a double date. If this sounds weird now, just know that the story ends with Mothersbaugh being catapulted through his hotel door by the TV hostess a few hours later so he could come down off a PCP high. Warner Brothers Records Mark Mothersbaugh, the lead singer of the band Devo, has ...
(July 7) -- Grace Slick has a shocking secret: She's the biggest klutz in the world. It's a secret that the former Jefferson Airplane singer and Rock and Roll Hall of Famer has been hiding during her 40-year showbiz career, but one that is finally catching up with her. "I am the biggest klutz in the world," she admitted to AOL News. "I went to an art store recently to pick up some art supplies, and I slammed into some metal sliding and broke my left arm in three places and hurt my leg as well." (July 1) -- July 3 marks 39 years since Jim Morrison, the deep-voiced front man for the band The Doors, was found dead in an apartment bathtub in Paris, France. But that doesn't mean "The Lizard King" isn't still making the rounds in one of his former West Hollywood haunts. As devout fans gather at his Parisian grave this weekend, looking for signs of the brooding singer and poet's spirit, they might be better served if they visited a Mexican restaurant at 8512 Santa Monica Blvd. Chris Epting, AOL Mexico is a Los Angeles restaurant that once housed The Doors' recording studio where Jim ...
(June 18) -- June 18 marks the 68th anniversary of Paul McCartney's birth -- if he had lived. Yes, that's right, if he had lived. Because while that old "Paul is dead" urban legend was supposedly killed when McCartney himself did a news conference in 1969 announcing that the rumors of his death had been "greatly exaggerated," an upcoming new documentary is hoping to exhume it -- with the alleged help of George Harrison. WireImage / Getty Images According to a new documentary, Heather Mills, left, somehow inadvertently caused her ex-husband, Paul McCartney's, death in 1966, more than a year ...
Paul McCartney, who with John Lennon wrote the songs that helped the Beatles' change the face of rock-and-roll, will perform at the White House on June 2 at the invitation of President Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama. McCartney, one of two surviving Beatles (the other is Ringo Starr), will be awarded the Gershwin Prize for Popular Song from the Library of Congress, a honor that commemorates the legendary songwriting of George and Ira Gershwin. He is the third recipient of the award, following Stevie Wonder and Paul Simon. The McCartney concert will be broadcast July 28 on PBS. McCartney, ...
(Jan. 26) -- All that loud rock 'n' roll music may not be so bad for your hearing after all. In fact, after compiling data for people ages 45 to 75, a new study from the University of Wisconsin-Madison has concluded that each successive generation is experiencing hearing loss at lower levels than those in the same age category who came before it. Karen Cruickshanks, the study's primary author, monitored the hearing of 5,300 participants over five-year intervals from 1993 to 2008. Despite the advent of arena rock concerts and amplifiers that go up to 11, Cruickshanks found that men saw a 13 ...
