Blagojevich Asks Judge to Cancel Retrial, Sentence Him for Lying

In an unexpected move, the highly entertaining and often unpredictable former Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich has asked a federal judge to cancel his retrial and sentence him on the sole conviction in his first trial: lying to an FBI agent. Blagojevich insisted that he is still innocent but said he was making the request in the interest of justice and saving taxpayers money, according to a motion filed today in U.S. District Court in Chicago. He was convicted in the first trial on one of 24 counts, and the government is slated to retry him April 20. Richard Drew, AP Former Illinois ...

'Daily Show' Hot on the Trail of AWOL Wisconsin Lawmakers

Where are the "Wisconsin 14"? "Daily Show" correspondent John Oliver tried to track down the missing Democratic state senators who are frustrating Gov. Scott Walker's bid to curtail the collective bargaining rights of public employee unions. Monday on the Comedy Central program, the trail led faux reporter Oliver to the "notorious, lawless region" of Illinois, where he was forced to go through a series of checkpoints -- fast food drive-throughs on a tacky commercial strip -- in the "Rockford Province" before finding former Illinois governor (and "notorious former warlord") Rod ...

Opinion: Will Durst's 2010 Xmas Wish List

Wishing you all a Very Happy Merry. And no, I'm not falling into that trap. You go out and dance to the beat of whichever winter festival you want to celebrate. Christmas. Hanukkah, Kwanza, Saturnalia, Solstice, noon Tuesday, 420, a December date equal to the square root of the number 625. Whatever. And good on ya. As we say in politically correct San Francisco, "May the corpulent bearded one in the scarlet suit smile upon your chosen shrubbery." Now inevitably some people are going to find their stockings aren't quite stuffed with the egregious booty they were expecting or, most important, ...

Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr. Says 'Everyone Has Erred'

CHICAGO -- U.S. Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr., who has largely avoided the public eye of late, said in a rare interview Saturday that he is a public servant, not a perfect one, and didn't rule out a future run at higher office. Jackson, who has been dogged by links to the corruption case against former Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich and questions about his own relationship with a female "social acquaintance," told The Associated Press that he continually struggles with his "personal shortcomings." That includes mending his family relationships over the "immensely personal matter" of the female ...

Opinion: The Top 10 News Absurdities of 2010

(Dec. 10) -- Please be advised: the Top Ten Comedic News Stories of 2010 are not to be confused with the Top Ten Legitimate News Stories of 2010. They are as different as lasagna and asphalt. Earwax and linoleum. A lunch wagon sink trap and nuclear lab clean rooms. Toe shoes and track cleats. Christian Science ministers and health insurance seminars. Sure, sure, there were more serious stories involving death and destruction and devastation o'plenty, but we tend to concentrate more on those narratives that offer a break from the tension. That allows us to view the desolation from the lighter ...

Todd Palin on DWTS? How About 'Dancing With the Pols'?

Todd Palin on DWTS? How About 'Dancing With the Pols'?

So "Dancing With the Stars" is flirting with Todd Palin, after daughter Bristol waltzed her way to the finals and created a voting brouhaha that resulted in record ratings. Sarah Palin -- former Alaska governor, 2008 GOP vice presidential candidate, wife of Todd, mom of Bristol -- discounted reports from our sister site, Popeater.com, that she encouraged DWTS producers to include failed Delaware Senate candidate Christine O'Donnell in the show's next season. Certainly, Bristol put the politics in DWTS. So clearly, more politicians mean higher ratings. And who needs stars? Here's ...

Mark Kirk Sworn In as Illinois Senator to Fill Obama's Unexpired Term

Republicans picked up another seat in the lame-duck Senate session on Monday when Mark Kirk was sworn in to fill a GOP prize: the few weeks remaining of President Obama's Illinois Senate term. Kirk, a five-term House member, who took the oath of office from Vice President Joe Biden, was escorted into the Senate chamber by Sen. Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) and the last Republican elected to the U.S. Senate from Illinois: Peter Fitzgerald, elected for one term in 1998. Kirk comes early to the Senate as a result of a court-ordered special election to replace Obama. He replaces Democrat Roland Burris, ...
