Rand Paul, an advocate for the conservative tea party movement, waxed eloquent in his maiden Senate speech about the perilous nature of compromise, the national debt and the historic argument over slavery. Though he said there was no "moral equivalency," Paul compared the current debt debate to the 19th century slavery dispute between free states and slaves states. Paul (R-Ky.) has been assigned the Senate desk of Sen. Henry Clay, who also represented Kentucky and was known as the "Great Compromiser," in part for his efforts to settle the nation's differences over slavery ...
As we've noted often in Poll Watch, surveys about the 2012 presidential race more than a year in advance of when the first caucus and primary votes are cast probably show more about simple name recognition than their value as a predictor of what will happen. When Mike Huckabee scored an upset victory against the better-known, better-financed Mitt Romney in the Iowa caucuses in 2008, the New York Times noted that he had been "barely a blip on the national scene just two months ago." This time around, Huckabee is in a very different position on the strength of his rise to the top tier of GOP ...
In a move that may seem to some like putting the fox in charge of the hen house, Rep. Ron Paul (R-Texas) has been named to head the House subcommittee that oversees the Federal Reserve. Paul, 75, is a longtime critic of the central bank and, as Bloomberg pointed out, has even written a book called "End the Fed." He will lead the domestic monetary policy subcommittee of the House Financial Services panel. In announcing Paul's appointment Thursday, chairman-elect Spencer Bachus (R-Ala.) said the Texan would add to the team that "crafted the first comprehensive financial reform bill to put an ...
(Dec. 3) -- Not everyone is out to get Julian Assange. Ron Paul, the Texas congressman and former presidential candidate, took to his Twitter feed today and put up a staunch defense of WikiLeaks, the whistle-blower website that so many in the U.S. government love to hate. From Newt Gingrich to Hillary Rodham Clinton to Sarah Palin, American politicians spent the week excoriating Assange, the site's founder, for leaking classified government documents to the world. But the iconoclastic Rep. Paul wasn't joining about to join in the chorus. .bbpBox10716266021003264 ...
You are witnessing the death of an industry. What the eco-freaks could never do -- drum up significant support for mass transit -- the TSA has done in just one decade. Hard to believe there was a time when flying was glamorous, but glamorous, exciting and sexy it was from the 1940s through the 1960s. Stewardesses wore cute little suits, and passengers dressed up too. Airline meals weren't great, but they sure beat the tiny bags of pretzels we get now. Back in the day, the word airplane conjured up images of passengers disembarking in Honolulu, welcomed by young women holding leis. An ...
The authority of the Federal Reserve, the nation's central bank, and its chairmen has depended much on the perception of their independence and being above the political fray. That's a line that the current Fed chief, Ben Bernanke, is finding very hard to walk, especially after the Fed's decision earlier this month to pump $600 billion into the economy in hopes of jump-starting what has been an anemic recovery. Bernanke is, by now, no stranger to this challenging exercise. He got a big taste of it when he, along with former Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson, and the backing of then President ...

Emboldened by dramatic Republican gains in Tuesday's election, President Obama's would-be rivals in 2012 are edging toward coming-out parties for a campaign that should be well under way by next spring. Several from the 2008 field -- Mitt Romney, Mike Huckabee and Sarah Palin -- are in the forefront of the early buzz -- and they've done little to discourage the speculation. "I haven't made that decision," Romney insists. But the former Massachusetts governor is raising money like crazy and appeared in 25 states on behalf of Republican candidates during the midterm campaign. His political ...
(Oct. 26) -- Don't know squat about many of this year's elections contenders? You may find yourself more familiar with some of their friends and family. Plus: Full 2010 Elections Coverage AP 1. A new Gallup poll, conducted Sept. 25-26, shows former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney leading the pack of possible 2012 GOP presidential hopefuls with 19 percent of the vote. Former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin trails him with 16 percent of the vote. Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee gets 12 percent, and former House Speaker Newt Gingrich gets 9 percent. Interestingly, Texas Rep. Ron Paul is in fifth place, ahead of Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty and Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour. Gallup notes that, this far in advance of an election, candidates who have run before tend to poll better than ...
