A 15-count indictment was handed up Wednesday by a Middlesex County grand jury against Dharun Ravi, of Plainsboro, who had already faced invasion of privacy charges along with another student, Molly Wei. The indictment charges Ravi with bias intimidation, invasion of privacy, witness and evidence tampering, and ...

NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J. -- New Jersey's largest university will offer a gender-neutral housing program in three dorms that aims to make the campus more inclusive for gay students. Starting this fall, gay, lesbian and transgender students at Rutgers University's New Brunswick campus can choose either male or female roommates under the pilot program. Heterosexual students will also be permitted to live in rooms with students of the opposite sex. Men and women will share bathrooms. Rutgers drew scrutiny after freshman Tyler Clementi killed himself days after authorities said his dorm roommate used ...
PISCATAWAY, N.J. -- Rutgers football player Eric LeGrand made his first public appearance since being paralyzed in a game against Army more than four months ago. LeGrand attended a "Laugh to Heal Comedy Fest Fundraiser" for him at the Rutgers Athletic Center on Saturday. "I just want to thank everybody for coming out here today and I'm just going to keep on chopping during my rehab," LeGrand told the crowd of approximately 3,000 who attended the comedy show featuring Rutgers alumnus Bill Bellamy. PISCATAWAY, N.J. (AP) -- Jonathan Mitchell's four-point play with less than a second remaining capped a career-high 25-point performance and gave Rutgers a 77-76 victory over No. 9 Villanova on Wednesday night. Mitchell, who was coming off a career-best 24 points in a loss to Notre Dame, hit a 3-point shot from about 25 feet and was fouled by Corey Fisher. After a Villanova timeout, Mitchell, a 74 percent free throw shooter, hit the tiebreaker. Fisher's length-of-the-court inbound pass was caught by Maurice Sutton as he fell out of bounds. The Rutgers students poured on the court -- nothing ...
Score one for the bullied. New Jersey lawmakers have passed a law against harassment in schools that will require educators to adhere to an "Anti-Bullying Bill of Rights." The measure sailed through the state General Assembly and Senate by wide margins Monday and now heads to to the desk of Gov. Chris Christie, The Associated Press reported. Christie, a Republican, has spoken out against bullying in schools but has not said whether he would sign the bill. Under the legislation, public school employees would undergo training on how to spot and deal with bullying. School districts would create ...
The start of the official signing period for the college basketball recruiting class for 2011 boded well for the promise of the latest Rutgers coach to mine the deep pool of talent in his home state, as well as the nearby region. "It's a big deal -- keeping guys within a five-hour drive is a big deal, not letting guys get away,'' Mike Rice, on the job at Rutgers since replacing Fred Hill in May, said last month. "So whether it's in D.C. or Westchester (New York), we're gonna be fighting, scratching, clawing for the best talent in this region. Again, you've seen the names throughout the paper ...
Whether you're a football widow, a football fanatic or a football know-nothing, you must have heard about the traumatic injuries recently sustained on the gridiron by college and pro players alike: A Rutgers player was paralyzed after colliding helmet-first into his opponent on a kick-off return, while four NFL players were knocked out of their games after particularly aggressive hits. Despite these brutal injuries, the game goes on --- from the pros down through college, high school and to the Pop Warner league. The inherent danger in the game is never far from my mind every time my son ...
The football carnage was worse than usual this past weekend. A college player was paralyzed and a couple of NFL players came close. Do you feel the least bit responsible? Don't worry, it will pass. We long ago accepted broken necks as collateral damage. Regrettable, but what are you going to do, ban football? Nobody wants that, not even most of the players who now spend their lives in wheelchairs. So we'll send our thoughts and prayers out to Eric LeGrand and demand the NFL tweak its head-hunting rules. Then we'll slide right back into our fantasy leagues or debating whether the BCS is ...
(Oct. 18) -- "Football is going to turn into the Army. It'll be one of those things that middle-class parents don't want their kids doing." So predicted New Yorker writer Malcolm Gladwell earlier this month, well before Rutgers defensive back Eric Legrand suffered paralysis from the neck down after tackling an Army kickoff returner on Saturday. "Ooh, what a great open-field hit," said the announcer as Legrand lay on the ground with his head twitching. Watching the clip would likely give at least some parents pause about allowing their children to play football. But such injuries are ...
