Easy for him to say. When Rivest arrived earlier this week at the cabin near Soda Springs, about 90 miles northeast of Sacramento, the snow was so deep it nearly touched the power lines crossing in front of the cabin. Snow was piled at least 10 feet high on top of the deck of the A-frame home. Rich Pedroncelli, AP A California Department of Transportation snow remover clears a road ...
A California man who was mistaken for a burglar lost his life last weekend when a victimized homeowner chased him down and hacked him to death with an ax, according to police reports. The homeowner, 29-year-old Steven Zinda, has been booked into the Sacramento County Jail on a single count of murder. He is being held without bail, and his arraignment is scheduled to take place later today. According to police documents and interviews, this is how the story unfolded: Early Sunday morning, Zinda returned home and discovered someone trying to rob his home in Rio Linda, a small community in the ...
Dijon mustard? Aisle 2, condiments, next to the ketchup. Stewed tomatoes? Aisle 3, canned vegetables, beside the beans. Strolling violinist? Aisle 1, produce, over by the sweet potatoes. A trio of string players treated grocery shoppers to an in-the-aisles performance of "Habanera," from Bizet's opera "Carmen," last month. The group also delighted shoppers and diners at three other Macon, Ga., locations, while a local children's choir lifted their voices amid the rods and reels at Bass Pro Shops, serenading holiday shoppers with "Carol of the Bells" and "Silent Night." "The response was ...
SACRAMENTO, Calif. (Dec. 15) -- A mother loading her 2-year-old son into an SUV used her body to protect the toddler before she was shot and killed in an ensuing midday gunbattle at a Sacramento strip mall, sheriff's officials said Wednesday. Monique Nelson, 30, had just strapped her son into his car seat when she was struck in the chest, and detectives believe she positioned herself to protect her son, Sacramento County Sheriff's Sgt. Tim Curran said. "She was found with her body over the young child," he said. "So we believe she did hear the gunfire." A second victim, 20-year-old Marvion ...
SACRAMENTO, Calif. (Dec. 14) -- A mother loading her 2-year-old son into an SUV was killed Tuesday and five others were wounded in a gunbattle at a strip mall in south Sacramento, authorities said. Two men were inside Fly Cuts & Styles barber shop just before 1 p.m. when two other men came in and started shooting, said Sacramento County Sheriff's Sgt. Tim Curran. The men in the barber shop were armed and returned fire, Curran said. The gunbattle apparently moved into the parking lot with at least one of the suspects getting into a white sedan. Curran said the gunfire continued as some of ...
ROSEVILLE, Calif. (Oct. 22) - A fire that erupted during a police standoff at a suburban Sacramento mall did more than destroy part of a regional shopping hub. It also provided an economic setback to a region of Northern California struggling to emerge from recession. City leaders in Roseville, about 17 miles east of the state capital, pledged to make a speedy recovery after the Roseville Galleria was set ablaze just as the stores were gearing up for the crucial holiday shopping season. Police descended on the mall at midmorning Thursday when a man claiming to have a gun entered the video ...
(Oct. 3) -- To diners, it must have seemed like mealtime magic: Squeeze a little lemon on a prawn and watch as it hops up, jumps around and "dances" on the dinner plate. But animal rights activists say there's nothing magical about this one -- because these shrimp aren't dancing for fun. They're writhing in pain. The "dancing prawn" dish features live prawns with their shells ripped off. When diners squeeze the lemon, the prawns react as you might in that situation: with a great big "ouch" reflex. Patrick Semansky, AP Ken Frelich holds a live shrimp in the Frelich Seafood store in ...
(Sept. 24) -- Two Navy pilots from San Diego have been grounded after their helicopters dipped into Lake Tahoe last week. The Sept. 13 incident was caught on a dramatic video, which shows the two choppers hovering just above the water. At one point, one of the $33 million aircraft seems to lose control and flip over into the lake, but the pilot manages to bring it back up out of the water. Both helicopters droped into the lake because they did not have enough power to stay in their hovering positions, Lt. Aaron Kakiel, spokesman for the Naval Air Forces command at North Island, where the ...
SACRAMENTO, Calif. (Sept. 12) - Originally billed as a chance to reflect on the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, a series of raucous tea party rallies around the country on Sunday ended up focusing almost entirely on an event still to come - the Nov. 2 election. "We are your everyday, average, churchgoing families, we represent the majority of people in this nation, and we're ready to take back our government," said Pam Pinkston of Fair Oaks, Calif., one of about 4,000 people to attend Sacramento's "United to the Finish" gathering. SACRAMENTO, Calif. (Aug. 26) -- The tires of a JetBlue airplane caught fire Thursday during a hard landing in Sacramento that left 15 people with minor injuries and sent passengers down emergency slides to escape the aircraft. Passenger Michelle McDuffie said people onboard felt a thud when the plane touched down about 12:50 p.m. after a flight from Long Beach, but nobody thought there was an emergency until the crew shouted for everyone to exit on the inflatable slides. McDuffie saw the burning tires when she was on the ground. "I thought, Oh I wish I had gotten my bag off. But I was just ...
