Gabrielle Giffords was shot at a similar event Jan. 8. Perlmutter, a Democrat, started his "Government in the Grocery" event after taking office in 2007, holding more than 70 open meetings at supermarkets. He postponed an event earlier this month because of the Giffords' shooting. A news release by said the congressman and Safeway have consulted with law enforcement to ensure the safety of everyone involved. As Giffords held a similar meeting at a Tucson Safeway, a lone ...
A Safeway pharmacist in Colorado accidentally gave Mareena Silva, who is six weeks pregnant, a drug that is used to terminate pregnancies instead of the antibiotic she needed. Silva was rushed to the hospital after taking the pill and becoming sick. She is said to be at risk of miscarriage or giving birth to a baby with birth defects. The pill Silva ingested was called methotrexate. It belongs to a powerful class of drugs known as antimetabolites, which slow the growth of living cells. Methotrexate impacts the body's ability to use folic acid, which is necessary for DNA synthesis and cell ...
FORT LUPTON, Colo. - A Colorado woman who is six weeks pregnant says a pharmacist at a grocery store mistakenly gave her an abortion drug instead of an antibiotic and now she fears she will lose her unborn child. In a mired economy like this one, many consumers can't afford to be picky about brand-name products at the supermarket. Luckily, generic brands are upping their game and offering us more bang for our buck -- and then some. According to the latest consumer research conducted by Mintel, the private label market -- which produces affordable store-brand products instead of pricey name-brand ones -- has enjoyed tremendous sales growth in recent years and continues to expand thanks to major support from consumers. In fact, Mintel research found that a whopping 44 percent of grocery shoppers ...
The wait is over. After keeping her Twitter account silent for several days following Saturday's shooting at a Safeway supermarket in Tuscon, Ariz., that killed six and injured 13 others -- including Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords -- Sarah Palin returned to the popular social networking site on Wednesday. As is often the case with Palin's messages on the microblogging site, her tweet directed her followers over to her Facebook page. .bbpBox25158121525608450 {background:url(http://a3.twimg.com/profile_background_images/140652630/SPTwitter901.jpg) #58709b;padding:20px;} ...
(Nov. 15) -- A professional "frugalista" is attempting what may be his biggest challenge yet: purchasing a complete Thanksgiving dinner for six people for less than $1 -- total. Jeffrey Strain writes about ways to save cash at Grocery Coupon Guide, and he was inspired to do his cheapskate challenge after attempting a similar effort he calls "the penny experiment." "Last year, I found a penny and picked it up and some teenagers nearby laughed at me for doing it," Strain told AOL News. "I started thinking about whether it was possible to turn this penny into $1 million for food ...
Linda, the scene you describe from the movie "Food Inc.," in which a family of four is unable to afford fresh pears and instead is compelled to choke down fast-food "dollar meals" sounds heartbreaking. I have yet to see the movie because -- most frustratingly -- it is not playing anywhere in the D.C. area, where I live (though I did read both '"The Omnivore's Dilemma" and "Fast Food Nation," on which the film is based). Like you, I am lucky. I go to my farmers' market every week; at the supermarket I can choose to spend my grocery money on organic eggs and milk and high-quality meat and ...
