Laura Dekker left the small Dutch harbor town of Den Osse this morning for Portugal, where her effort will officially get under way. She was accompanied on the 38-foot yacht Guppy by her father, Dick, who said he went along on the ride just to make sure everything was in working order before Laura pulls up anchor in Lisbon and heads for the open seas alone. "I am not really afraid," she told journalists and supporters who jammed the ...
KABUL, Afghanistan (July 29) -- A second U.S. Navy sailor who went missing in a dangerous part of eastern Afghanistan was found dead and his body recovered, a senior U.S. military official and Afghan officials said Thursday. The family of Petty Officer 3rd Class Jarod Newlove, a 25-year-old from the Seattle area, had been notified of his death, the U.S. military official said on condition of anonymity, because he was not authorized to disclose the information. Newlove and Petty Officer 2nd Class Justin McNeley went missing last Friday in Logar province. NATO recovered the body of McNeley - a ...
(June 26) -- The California 16-year-old whose failed attempt to sail solo around the world triggered an international rescue mission and fierce criticism of her parents arrived back on dry land today and was reunited with her older brother, a fellow sailing adventurer. A French patrol boat brought Abby Sunderland ashore today on the French island of Reunion off the coast of east Africa. She was rescued June 12th by another French fishing boat 2,000 miles west of Australia, after her sailboat's mast snapped in a storm. Sunderland's 17-year-old brother Zac flew to Reunion to meet her, ...
(June 18) -- The first thing Reid Stowe did after spending more than three years at sea -- apparently breaking the record for the longest sea voyage -- was kiss his girlfriend and the 2-year-old son he'd never met. The New York man has spent the past 1,152 days on the water, without setting foot on land to restock supplies or fuel. He's lived on dried fish and sprouts, and he had tears streaming down his face when his 70-foot double-mast schooner, which set off from New Jersey in April 2007, docked in Manhattan on Thursday. "Every time it got hard, every time I got afraid, every time I ...
Abby Sunderland is alive and well. Her boat is upright (see photograph, courtesy Australian Search and Rescue, on her blog). She'll be rescued within 24 hours by a French fishing vessel now speeding to her location. I'll bet her first interview will reveal she's not one bit sorry about her quest to become the youngest sailor to traverse the globe solo. The youngest, mind you -- not youngest girl. On June 10, emergency signals went off when Sunderland got caught in 25-foot waves in the wintertime Indian Ocean, a sea her brother Zac, who achieved the same youngest sailor feat when he was just ...
