San Quentin Inmates Rescue Boaters From Bay

San Quentin State Prison holds a lot of bragging rights. Home to California's male death row, the prison sits on a desirable plot of Marin County overlooking San Francisco Bay and has hosted the likes of such crooning celebrities as Johnny Cash ("At San Quentin," 1969) and B.B. King ("Live at San Quentin," 1990). As of Wednesday, the jail can now add "inmate heroes" to the boasting list. The prison, which houses more than 5,000 inmates, trains selected nonviolent offenders as paramedics and firefighters. The 16-man crew lives outside prison walls on prison property in an old firehouse and ...

Drivers Donate $61,000 for Giants Fan Beaten Into a Coma at Dodger Stadium

Motorists driving by Dodger Stadium on Monday donated $61,000 to help San Francisco paramedic Bryan Stow, the Giants fan who was beaten into a coma last month by two men. It was the second time in less than a month that the parking lot hosted a fundraiser -- on March 14, passing drivers and pedestrians helped victims of the Japanese earthquake and tsunami. Stow was severely beaten March 31 at the stadium by two men wearing Dodgers clothes and remains in a coma. No arrest has been made in connection with the attack. Donations were accepted between 8 a.m. and 3 p.m. with the final ...

Legendary Big-Wave Surfer Sion Milosky Drowns at Mavericks

Sion Milosky had surfed waves just like this one before. But this time, the colossal wall of water at Mavericks plunged him deep into the ocean and would not let him go. Milosky, a famed big wave surfer from Hawaii, died late Wednesday after wiping out and being caught in a two-wave hold-down off the coast of California's infamous Mavericks Beach, south of San Francisco. Other surfers watched on in horror as a rogue wave broke on top of 35-year-old Milosky, a fixture in the small, elite world of big-wave surfing. "He was really deep and he makes the drop, and the end section comes and just ...

Feds Deploy More Radiation Monitors in Western US

SAN FRANCISCO -- Growing concern by Americans over exposure from damaged nuclear plants in Japan has prompted officials to deploy more radiation monitors in the western United States and Pacific territories, federal environmental regulators say. Officials with the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission said they do not expect harmful radiation levels to reach anywhere in the U.S. from Japan. "The agency decided out of an abundance of caution to send these deployable monitors in order to get some monitors on the ground closer to Japan," Jonathan Edwards, director of the U.S. Environmental ...

An American woman out of communication with her sister in Japan was able to locate her with the help of NBC's Ann Curry. Curry was in the Japanese town of Minamisanriku, which was devastated by last week's tsunami, when she received a tweet Sunday from Megan Walsh back in San Francisco. Walsh had been asking journalists on Twitter for help in finding her sister, Canon Purdy, an English teacher who had just arrived in Minamisanriku on Friday, the day the earthquake and tsunami struck, to attend the graduation of her former students. California Braces Calmly for Waves From Tsunami

Waves from the Japanese earthquake are expected to hit California shortly after 11 a.m. EST, but it won't be the stuff of Hollywood blockbusters. Meteorologists estimate that Northern California will be struck first at 11:16 a.m. with waves between 3 and 7 feet high, with the swell subsiding as it moves down the coast. It will arrive in Newport Beach at 11:45 a.m., topping out at 3 feet. In San Francisco, police have closed Ocean Beach -- the area that wraps around the Golden Gate Bridge. A four-lane highway in the area is also closed. "We have officers out there who are redirecting ...

San Francisco Hills Get Rare Dusting of Snow

SAN FRANCISCO - Hilly areas of San Francisco got a rare light dusting of snow, the National Weather Service said Saturday. Snow fell briefly late Friday and early Saturday on the city's Twin Peaks neighborhood and some other areas with higher elevations, meteorologist Mark Strobin said. "A little bit up in the hills," Strobin told The Associated Press. "It snowed down to about 400 feet." But there was only rain downtown and in other other areas of the near sea level city, and the snow that did fall disappeared rapidly. The city last saw snow on the ground in 1976, when an inch ...
