Lowe's Staff Save Dozens as Storm Hits North Carolina Store

SANFORD, N.C. - More than 100 employees and customers at a home improvement store, crammed shoulder-to-shoulder seeking safety from one of the deadly storms that ripped through the South, screamed in near unison once the steel roof curled off overhead, the store's manager said Sunday. They all made it out alive Saturday, thanks to quick action by Lowe's store manager Michael Hollowell and his employees, who carried out an emergency response plan they had learned. They herded everyone to the windowless rear area of the store, away from the direct hit out front. ...

Killer Storms, Tornadoes Rip Through Carolinas

North Carolina officials said there were multiple fatalities and they were working to confirm the exact number. Urban search and rescue teams were in two counties looking for residents who might be trapped in damaged buildings. Jim R. Will Durst: My Top 10 Comedic Stories of the Decade

(Dec. 17) -- Believe it or not, an entire decade has passed since the turn of the millennium. One hundred twenty months. One tenth of a century. More than 3,600 days. How did that happen? It's harder to comprehend than a faded Kazakhstani street sign tagged by Mongolian graffiti. As we are painfully aware, much ugly stuff occurred during the decade, but what with all the mayhem and turmoil, you might think nothing worth laughing about went down. You'd be wrong. I know. I know. I know. "Not another top 10 list. " Yes. Another top 10 list. Hey, how many ends of the decade does one get in a ...

Plane Catches Fire at Orlando Airport; No Injuries Reported

(Oct. 8) -- The right engine of Allegiant Air Flight 700 caught fire on the runway shortly before takeoff at Orlando-Sanford International Airport today, forcing all passengers to evacuate by jetway. The fire was quickly extinguished and nobody was injured, according to the Federal Aviation Administration. A passenger first spotted the fire from a window as the plane, a McDonnell Douglas MD-80, was wheeled away from the gate, WESH Orlando reports. The cause of the fire remains unknown, but local officials and the FAA are investigating. Meanwhile the 142 passengers on the plane bound for ...

Gov. Mark Sanford: Did He and Lover Rekindle Flame in Florida?

Gov. Mark Sanford: Did He and Lover Rekindle Flame in Florida?

They're back together, maybe. South Carolina Republican Gov. Mark Sanford told reporters Wednesday he and his Argentine lover reunited last weekend in Florida. The Associated Press reports that Sanford, during a news conference on another matter, said he spent several days with Maria Belen Chapur to see if they could restart their relationship -- a pairing that cost Sanford his marriage and almost got him thrown out of office. He was still married to Jenny Sanford last summer when he disappeared for five days to visit Chapur in South America. Misinformed aides said the governor was hiking the ...

Bank Robber Says Heists Were on 'Bucket List'

Bank Robber Says Heists Were on 'Bucket List'

(March 31) -- Many people compile a list of things they want to do before they die. According to one Florida woman, checking off one of those items landed her in jail. From her cell in the Volusia County Jail, 51-year-old Patricia Edwards told Orlando station WOFL Fox 35 of her decision to rob two Bank of America branches: one in DeLand on March 3, and the other in Sanford on March 23. "It was something on my 'bucket list,' " she told the news station. "I think everyone should have a list of things they want to do before they expire." According to police, Edwards handed the tellers of ...

Jenny Sanford Explains Away Her Husband's Affair

Jenny Sanford Explains Away Her Husband's Affair

After remaining relatively quiet on the subject of her husband's affair, Jenny Sanford offers an opinion on why her marriage unraveled in the pages of Vogue, as Bonnie Goldstein points out. I have to admit, though, seeing the fashion magazine label Sanford as an "unlikely heroine" for handling the affair gracefully left me feeling a little troubled -- and a little less optimistic about Sanford's future than my colleagues are. ...

Mark Sanford Impeachment Possible, Republican State Senator Says

Gov. Mark Sanford (R-S.C.) is under even more pressure from his own party. A Republican state senator is raising the possibility of impeachment, accusing Sanford of violating state regulations by not choosing the lowest rate available for two international commercial flights for state business. ...

Sanford, Ensign, Whatever -- At Least It's Not 2011

Sanford, Ensign, Whatever -- At Least It's Not 2011

Yes, believe it or not, there is good news these days for Republicans. For one thing, their 2012 presidential prospects are imploding in 2009 instead of 2011. For another, if they are so inclined, there's still plenty of time to rebrand the GOP as less judgmental about other people's personal lives. Just a day after Nevada Sen. John Ensign apologized to his colleagues for his extramarital affair with a married aide, South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford stuns us with the news that he has been having an extramarital affair with a woman in Argentina. From a party perspective, this casts quite a ...
