Rough Waters Remain for Louisiana Seafood

Rough Waters Remain for Louisiana Seafood

In a few places in southern Louisiana's Barrataria Bay and Bay Jimmy, oil still sheens from the marshes. That shimmer, and the areas around them still closed to fishing, serves as a reminder for all fishermen in the Gulf Coast of the challenges they face in the coming years. The BP oil spill, which began a year ago today, dealt a massive blow to an already stressed industry, and as the region gears up for shrimp season, nothing is certain. Acy Cooper, head of the Louisiana Shrimp Association, doesn't expect lowered yields for this year's harvest. Lots of adult shrimp got away last year when ...

375-Pound Shark Leaps Into Fisherman's Boat [VIDEO]

FREEPORT, Texas -- It's the catch of a lifetime, but it's not clear whether a Texas fisherman landed an 8-foot shark or it landed him. Twenty-nine-year-old Jason Kresse of Freeport says he and two crew members were dumping fish guts in the Gulf of Mexico about 3:45 a.m. Monday when they heard splashes in the distance and then something hit the side of their 25-foot boat. A shark in an apparent rush to feed had jumped into the back and was thrashing around. Kresse says the crew couldn't get close to the 375-pound fish to toss it back in the water. It died several hours later. The shark ...

McLobster Hopes Crushed By McDonald's; Twitter Is Still Hungry

McLobster Hopes Crushed By McDonald's; Twitter Is Still Hungry

Good luck catching a McLobster. Folks across the Internet are lovin' all the buzz surrounding the seemingly mythical McDonald's menu item, but the fast-food company says that it has no plans to bring the crustaceans to any more of its U.S. locations. And that goes for the McSushi, too. While the McLobster is news to Surge Desk, it looks like the seafood sandwich has been seasonally on the menu in northern Maine and the Canadian Maritimes for at least a few years. Intrigued? Check out this commercial: Before you pack up the van for a northbound McLobster sampling road trip, take a ...

Will London Serve Only Sustainable Fish With Its Chips?

Will London Serve Only Sustainable Fish With Its Chips?

When the 2012 Olympic Games come to London, the city is going to be serving a lot of fish and chips. And one organization has challenged the city to get every last serving of it from sustainable sources. Launched this week, the Sustainable Fish City initiative aims to get everyone in the city, from fish and chips shacks to top-end restaurants, schools and grocery stores, serving responsibly sourced seafood by 2012. It's an ambitious goal, but the movement has gathered a lot of support over the past two years, and organizers hope to use the international spotlight of the Olympics to keep their ...

754-Pound Tuna Sells for Record $396,000 in Tokyo

A giant bluefin tuna sold for a record $396,000 today in the first auction of the year at Tokyo's fish market. At 32.49 million Japanese yen, it's the highest price any fish has ever sold for since the Tokyo Metropolitan Central Wholesale Market started keeping track in 1999. The fish weighs 754 pounds, so the auction price breaks down to about $527 per pound of meat. "It was an exceptionally large fish," market spokesman ...

Progress Made on Protecting Sharks, Groups Say

PARIS (Nov. 27) -- An international conservation conference in Paris made progress Saturday on protecting sharks but didn't do anything to save the Atlantic bluefin tuna, which has been severely overfished to feed the market for sushi in Japan, environmental groups said. Delegates from 48 nations spent 11 days in Paris haggling over fishing quotas for the Atlantic and Mediterranean, poring over scientific data and pitting the demands of environmentalists against those of the fishing industry. Conservation groups said delegates took steps in the right direction with moves to protect oceanic ...

Toxic Chemicals Deep at BP Spill Site Raise Warning Flags

Toxic Chemicals Deep at BP Spill Site Raise Warning Flags

(Nov. 4) -- On the surface at least, the Gulf of Mexico appears relatively clean more than six months after the massive BP oil spill, but scientists say they've found toxic materials deep in the ocean at the site of the blowout, and some warn that all the environmental impacts of the gusher won't be known for some time. In the latest study published this week, researchers report that large quantities of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, or PAHs, were present in the deep sea near the Macondo well head in May, and that the potentially dangerous compounds had likely spread to other areas since ...

First Dispersant Tests in Gulf Seafood Come Back Clean

First Dispersant Tests in Gulf Seafood Come Back Clean

(Nov. 1) -- In the ongoing saga of post-oil spill Gulf of Mexico seafood, officials have been conducting tests for oil on incoming seafood, but not for oil dispersants, the shadowy and possibly poisonous materials that BP spilled in liberal quantities across the region in an effort to keep the oil from reaching shore. Now the Food and Drug Administration has released data from the first tests for dispersant chemicals, and the seafood is coming back safe to eat. Less than 1 percent of samples had any trace of the chemicals in question at all, and those had the chemicals at levels far below the ...

Asian Carp, Eh? Canada to Fight Back Against Invasive Fish

(Oct. 6) -- Hockey prowess, health care norms and the correct way to pronounce the letter "O." On these fundamental disagreements, Canadians and Americans might never see eye-to-eye. But where invasive species of fish are concerned, researchers in the two countries are ready to team up and fight back. Asian carp, the much-maligned fish that's already wreaking havoc in Mississippi and Illinois, threatens to enter the Great Lakes, where it would likely destroy indigenous populations and permanently throw off the region's delicate ecosystem. Nancy Stone, Chicago Tribune / MCT An Asian ...

PETA Gets 'Dancing' Shrimp Kicked Off Menu

PETA Gets 'Dancing' Shrimp Kicked Off Menu

(Oct. 3) -- To diners, it must have seemed like mealtime magic: Squeeze a little lemon on a prawn and watch as it hops up, jumps around and "dances" on the dinner plate. But animal rights activists say there's nothing magical about this one -- because these shrimp aren't dancing for fun. They're writhing in pain. The "dancing prawn" dish features live prawns with their shells ripped off. When diners squeeze the lemon, the prawns react as you might in that situation: with a great big "ouch" reflex. Patrick Semansky, AP Ken Frelich holds a live shrimp in the Frelich Seafood store in ...
