'South Sudan' Could Be Latest Change to Map of Africa

'South Sudan' Could Be Latest Change to Map of Africa

With initial results showing that nearly 99 percent of southern Sudanese have voted to secede from their country's Arab north, officials readying for the birth of their new nation have a dilemma on their hands: What to call it? A steering committee of southern officials -- many of them from former rebel groups vying for power in a new era of independence -- has been formed to juggle all the issues associated with forming a new country, including choosing a name, flag and national anthem. One of those officials, information minister Benjamin Marial, told The New York Times that more than a ...

Secessionist Gala Opens Old Civil War Wounds

Secessionist Gala Opens Old Civil War Wounds

A "Secession Ball" marking the 150th anniversary of the moment South Carolina chose to secede from the United States drew protesters along with ballroom dancers in the latest episode of America's festering conflict over race and the history of the Civil War. About 300 South Carolinians, the vast majority of them white, gathered in hoop skirts and white gloves in Charleston where the ball took place Monday evening. The group, which included two state legislators, re-enacted the 1860 secession convention and sang "Dixie." They insisted that the event was meant to celebrate their ancestors, not ...

Secession Movement Grows in Vermont

Secession Movement Grows in Vermont

Nine candidates for office in Vermont will run on a platform of breaking with the United States. The pro-secession candidates are planning to run for governor, lieutenant governor, and seven seats in the state Senate, the Associated Press reported. They are aligning themselves under a slate called Vermont Independence Day. Among the candidates for lieutenant governor is a 54-year-old car salesman named Peter Garritano, who says he wants to give Vermont a fresh start with a "real democracy." "I think that's the answer. Hopefully, it won't take another horrible economic breakdown to ...

What's the Matter with Texas?

What's the Matter with Texas?

Who needs the United States of America? Apparently, not Texas Republicans, a majority of whom, in a new poll, give their governor's remarks on secession a thumbs-up:51 percent of Texas Republicans approve of Perrry's [Rick] "suggestion that Texas may need to leave the United States." Also, a majority of Republicans and independents approve of how Texas government is run; most Democrats don't.So, fare the well, Texas! It's been nice having you (for the most part) at our little gathering of states. Though Perry has walked back his initial cut-and-run brainstorming, saying:"Clearly, I stated that ...

Alaska Senate Sends Sovereignty Bill to Sarah Palin

Alaska Senate Sends Sovereignty Bill to Sarah Palin

Earlier today, Matt Lewis took us to a magical future where Sarah Palin is the President, but I'm starting to think that Palin already thinks she's President...of something. First, there was her strange statement a few weeks ago, in which she seemed to be offering the United States some sort of treaty of protection with Alaska. Now, Alaska has become the latest in a spate of states passing, or trying to pass, state sovereignty resolutions. Texas' sovereignty resolution has even led to talk of secession. I have to say, although secession is crazy talk, at least that would mean that Texas was ...

So What If Texas DID Secede From The Union?

By  Tony Romm - Politics Daily
So What If Texas DID Secede From The Union?

The blogosphere is still rumbling this week after a suggestion by Texas Governor Rick Perry that the (now literally) Lone Star state secede from the embattled union. It does not help, of course, that a poll released on Thursday by Research2000 merely confirms the unfortunate truth that Perry's comments may have resonated among some Texans: In the survey, nearly 35 percent of respondents, mostly Republicans, indicated they felt Texas would be better off as an "independent nation." It would be naive to take these findings seriously; gauging public opinion on any topic is difficult and daunting, ...
