Click here to visit the new home of Politics Daily! The U.S. Army ordered a "psychological operations" team to manipulate visiting U.S. senators into pushing for more funding and troops for the war in Afghanistan, according to a report in Rolling Stone magazine. Three-star U.S. general Lt. Gen. William Caldwell is accused of deploying propaganda techniques, which the Army says are intended to "alter the behavior of foreign populations," against visiting U.S. dignitaries to Afghanistan in a potentially illegal, months-long operation to lobby Congress. Caldwell is responsible for the training of Afghan security forces. Gen. David Petraeus, the ...
WASHINGTON (Nov. 30) -- The Senate passed legislation Tuesday to make food safer in the wake of deadly E. coli and salmonella outbreaks, potentially giving the government broad new powers to increase inspections of food processing facilities and force companies to recall tainted food. The $1.4 billion bill, which would also place stricter standards on imported foods, passed the Senate 73-25. Supporters say passage is critical after widespread outbreaks in peanuts, eggs and produce. Those outbreaks have exposed a lack of resources and authority at the FDA as the embattled agency struggled to ...
(Oct. 28) -- Just in case you thought money doesn't equal power ... More than half of the U.S. senators are millionaires and four more fall just 100 grand short of the million-dollar mark, according to a recent Roll Call analysis. The survey, based on a review of Senate financial disclosure forms filed in 2010, also indicated that the majority of senators saw their fortunes grow during the past year. While many of the senators amassed their wealth through common means, Roll Call actually makes a point of highlighting the recent prevalence of increased wealth by inheritance in the Senate. For ...
(Aug. 31) -- Democrats have unearthed a recording of Sharron Angle, now the Republican candidate for Senate in Nevada, saying she would not have voted for federal relief for Hurricane Katrina -- a measure that received unanimous support in the Senate. In a 2005 interview with conservative KLAV radio, Angle said, "I would like to go and join my voice with Mike Pence and others who, when the $62 billion came out to be spent on Katrina relief, he said, 'Wait a minute, I'm voting no.'" (Here's the audio.) She was referring to Rep. Mike Pence, R-Ind., who in fact did vote for the $62 billion for ...
(June 30) -- The confirmation hearings for Supreme Court nominee Elena Kagan aren't over yet, but it's hard to escape the impression that, however they'll vote, the members of the Senate Judiciary Committee have little else to consider. And there was considerable optimism among Kagan supporters that she'll be confirmed. Yes, there are 24 witnesses on the official list still to be heard. But they'll be squeezed into one more day of testimony, and even that won't start until Thursday at 4 p.m. ET -- the late Sen. Robert Byrd will be lying in state in the Senate until that time, and senators ...
An agreement on health care reform isn't likely before Congress's August recess, but through "Tweet Your Senator" folks are sending lawmakers their views on the matter. It's another effort by the Obama administration to use social-networking media to generate a national conversation about an issue. Mashable's Adam Ostrow explains how it works: Tweet Your Senator, a new feature of BarackObama.com, is essentially a Twitter and Google Maps mashup that does what the name implies: sends a tweet to your Senator, encouraging them to pass healthcare reform legislation. To use it, you simply enter ...
Josh Marshall has a good piece up detailing the wave of significant Senate endorsements for Barack Obama's presidential bid. He takes special note of the so-called "Red-State Democrats." Consider the list of those who have come out for Obama in the past few days:Missouri's Claire McCaskillSouth Dakota's Tim JohnsonNebraska's Ben NelsonEach of these moderate Dems backed Obama following his loss in New Hampshire. Additionally, Obama has also gotten the high-profile nod from Arizona Governor Janet Napolitano and John Kerry (for better or worse). Senator Nelson articulated his decision, saying ...
When it comes to awards, the NHL basically has things covered. Nothing your friendly neighborhood FanHouse puckheads might develop could possibly rival the historic significance of the Lady Byng Trophy or the functionality of the William M. Jennings Trophy, which doubles as a delightful chili con queso bowl. But we can try, dammit. Here's four of the eight categories in our lusty gaze at 2007 in the review mirror (sans Mirtle, who decided to check out on life to concentrate on the true meaning of Boxing Day this holiday season.) NHL Man of the YearJP: Brian Burke. Wins a Cup, lets MacT overpay ...
Every day from Monday to Saturday, The Ice Sheet will take a look at the biggest stories in the league that happened on the ice and elsewhere the night before. Semi-Retired (adj.): 1. A near or incomplete state of retirement. 2. A code word, frequently used in professional hockey circa 2007, that describes a veteran player who is content to loaf around during the regular season until he decides to rejoin his team, causing a domino effect of financial repercussions. Scott Niedermayer returned from semi-retirement last night in Anaheim's shootout loss to the Sharks, but the real loss ...
Hockey Nerd Tuesday is a weekly feature on NHL FanHouse that chronicles the stat-heads, gear geeks and fanboys (and girls) who spend an uncomfortable amount of time putting the "fan" in fanatic. Have a hockey nerd you'd like to see featured? E-mail Greg Wyshynski with the details. Scrolling through the Toronto Maple Leafs section of FanHouse, one can plainly see that it hasn't been the kindest of years for the boys in the blue pajamas. They're practically in the basement of their division. They have a general manager who isn't allowed to fire his coach, and an owner who regrets hiring his ...
