The Faster You Walk, the Longer You'll Live, Study Finds

Good news for speed walkers: The speed of one's stride may be correlated to that individual's longevity, according to a new study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association. After gathering data on more than 34,000 senior citizens who participated in nine separate studies, researchers at the University of Pittsburgh found that every 0.2 miles an hour of increased walking speed in seniors is correlated to a 12 percent rise in survival rate. "It's a real part of the human experience to see that when someone slows down with age, they may not be doing as well as they once ...

Are Older Voters Blocking Social Policy Changes?

Are Older Voters Blocking Social Policy Changes?

ANALYSIS WASHINGTON (Nov. 18) -- As the baby boomers who gave us the term "generation gap" turn 65, a new divide is opening between young and old over everything from health care to gay rights to the right to get high. Republicans and Democrats alike insist it's time to stop piling debt onto future generations, yet political observers say the electoral clout of seniors may prove the biggest obstacle to reining in government spending. And just as in the 1960s, when many older Americans stood on the sidelines of the civil rights and women's movements, polls show seniors are the least enthused ...

Does Health Care Reform Hold a Ticking Time Bomb for Seniors?

Does Health Care Reform Hold a Ticking Time Bomb for Seniors?

President Obama's health care reform law continues to be unpopular, especially among seniors, and will likely play a major role in Tuesday's elections. According to a Kaiser Health Tracking poll, "about a third (32 percent) of seniors hold favorable views [of the health care reform bill, and] half (52 percent) [hold] unfavorable views." The opposition from what will likely be the largest bloc of midterm voters has probably cost the Democrats the House, and several senate seats, as well. To be sure, some of the concerns seniors have with the law may not drastically differ from the ...

Older Voters Leaning Republican This Year, Survey Finds

Add a generational divide to the problems facing Democrats this election year. Older voters are especially disappointed in the way government is working and are likely to turn out and vote in November and lean heavily towards Republicans, according to a survey out this week. The poll found that among seniors who claimed to be very interested in the election, just 40 percent said they wanted to see Democrats in control of Congress, with 51 percent saying they'd prefer the GOP in charge. The findings come from a survey released Monday by The Washington Post, the Henry J. Kaiser Family ...

Fallen Elders: A Button Can Save Their Lives

Fallen Elders: A Button Can Save Their Lives

(Sept. 23) -- When Ron Campbell, a volunteer with Delaware's New Castle County police, saw a red alert on the computerized dialing system early this month, he knew there might be a problem. A 76-year-old woman, living alone in Bellefonte, had failed to answer repeated phone calls. Campbell contacted a neighbor, who discovered that the woman was lying in bed, disoriented and ill; she was rushed to the hospital. A few days earlier, an 83-year-old woman was asleep in her Smithton, Pa., home when she was attacked by two would-be thieves. During the struggle, she managed to push the button on her ...

Cities Getting More Elder-Friendly; Suburbs Too

Cities Getting More Elder-Friendly; Suburbs Too

(Sept. 18) -- They're going to build a new playground in a Manhattan park -- a playground for old people. As Jessica Lappin, chairwoman of the City Council's Aging Committee, told AOL News, the playground is expected to have chess tables, gentle exercise equipment and plenty of shaded benches where frail elders can relax without worrying about bikes, skateboards, and errant Frisbees. It's a small piece of a major campaign that is making New York much more elder-friendly -- a goal that has been adopted of late by communities all across the country. They're working hard to keep those oldsters ...

Eldersex: Love Among the Ruined?

Eldersex: Love Among the Ruined?

Remember when Tom Jones was the tackiest thing on two legs? I realized I was way out of the mainstream in my taste in men when I saw all those women throwing underwear on stage. To me, Tom Jones was the epitome of sleaze. His big hits were some of the most reviled songs of my youth. But then I had not seen Tom Jones in 1964, before Vegas got hold of him. Pretty hot, if you ask me. Now, half a century later, he's releasing a brand-new album. "Praise & Blame" comes out on July 26. Believe it or not, Tom Jones is looking kind of hot again. You see, I'm old. I'm very, very old. The fact that ...

Obama Promotes $250 Rebates for Seniors in Health Care Donut Hole

In an ongoing effort to advertise the benefits of the new health care law, President Obama hosted a telephone town hall meeting Tuesday to remind eligible senior citizens that they will soon receive $250 checks from the government to help with prescription drug costs. "Medicare isn't just something you're entitled to, it's something you've earned," Obama told a crowd at a multi-purpose center just outside of Washington. "It's a sacred and inviolable trust between you and your country... The guaranteed Medicare benefits that you've earned will not change (under the new law)." The rebate ...

Seniors Should Stop Worrying (and Whining) About Health Reform

Seniors Should Stop Worrying (and Whining) About Health Reform

Seniors are squeaky wheels in the political system. They complain, they vote, and they're growing in number. If they seem querulous and wary about health reform, let's face it: This group, with its very own single-payer government health care program, has a lot of turf worth protecting. We've had our summer of unhinged talk about death panels and sniping over which party is a bigger threat to Medicare. But now the major congressional health bills from the House and from the Senate are finally on the table, and it's time for a reality check. There are 43 million people on Medicare and it ...

Obama's Social Security Claim Debunked

Obama's Social Security Claim Debunked

Campaigning in Florida on Saturday, Sen. Barack Obama attempted to capitalize on last week's turmoil on Wall Street to take a shot at Sen. John McCain's plan for reforming Social Security. Obama told the assembled crowd in the senior citizen rich state that under McCain's plan for Social Security, senior citizens would have lost their benefits as a result of the troubled investment market."I'll protect Social Security, while John McCain wants to privatize it. Without Social Security half of elderly women would be living in poverty - half. But if my opponent had his way, the millions of ...
