I think it's best if I just come out and say this up front: I'm not really sad that Al and Tipper Gore split up. Yes, I know. I'm an outlier. Nearly everyone I know -- and certainly everyone I'm reading -- is outright depressed by this separation. Don't get me wrong. I think it's a shame. And it's a shame because -- as my colleague Melinda Henneberger wrote on these pages recently -- they seemed like a couple who were genuinely in love. Between the 40 years of marriage and the four beautiful kids and the whole high school sweetheart thing and, yes -- the kisses -- they really looked like ...

"Even at a young age, she helped me understand things I never would have been able to understand otherwise. ...

Over that time, highlights of their union -- part fairy tale, part scripted drama -- have played out in the public square. First Encounter According to Mrs. Gore, she met Al the night of his high school graduation dance in 1965. "It was like everyone else melted away," she wrote. Wedding The Gores were married on May 19, 1970 at the National Cathedral in Washington, D.C. The Beatles' classic "All You Need is Love" was played on the church's massive pipe organ. Kids From 1973 to 1982, ...
