Tera Myers Drama: Should Her Porn Past Wreck a Teaching Career? [POLL]

Maybe she should have been teaching sex ed. Tera Myers has just had to leave her second high school teaching job in five years because of her porn past. Myers worked as an adult film star under the name Rikki Andersin in the mid-'90s. In 2006, then using the name Tericka Dye, she was at a Kentucky high school, teaching science and coaching the volleyball team, when her porn past surfaced. She was suspended for the school year, and then her contract was not renewed. Now it's happening again. For the past four years, Myers has been teaching science in St. Louis, but recently a student ...

Tea Party-Backed Candidate Christine O'Donnell's War on Masturbation

(Sept. 3) -- Delaware Republican Christine O'Donnell has become a tea party favorite. The Senate candidate says that Rep. Mike Castle, also a Republican, is no different from the Democratic aspirant, New Castle County Executive Chris Coons. And on one issue at least, O'Donnell, really does distinguish herself from her opponents: masturbation. Back in the 1990s, O'Donnell was the president of a Christian-right group called Saviors Alliance for Lifting the Truth (SALT), and The Huffington Post has taken a look back at her television appearances from the time preaching religious conservatism. On ...

Early Puberty in Girls: What Are the Social Consequences?

Early Puberty in Girls: What Are the Social Consequences?

A friend of mine took her 5-year-old to see the doctor last summer. She was concerned because she noticed that when her daughter came home from camp at the end of the day, she smelled . . . like a grown-up. "It's the weirdest thing," she confided to me. "She's only 5, but I think she has body odor." The doctor was reassuring but told her to keep an eye on her daughter. Apparently, among a handful of other symptoms -- early breast development, pubic and underarm hair, and a growth spurt -- body odor can be a sign of early-onset puberty. "But she's only 5!" my friend protested. "You'd be ...

Study: Med Students Need More Sex (And More Sex Ed)

(July 29) -- Medical school students aren't adequately prepared to talk to patients about sex -- because they're not leaving college well-versed in carnal matters. And yes, that goes for the bedroom and the classroom. A survey published in the August issue of Academic Medicine polled 2,261 medical students in an effort to determine just how confident they were in sex chatter with patients. The results offer a glimpse into the high-stress academic lifestyle at medical schools across the country -- and suggest that med students might need to get a little bit freakier to offer applicable ...

Survey: Teens Aren't Getting Any Smarter About Sex

(June 2) -- Attitudes among American teens about birth control, sexual activity and pregnancy have remained largely unchanged since 2002, according to a new federal report. Stalled progress is bad enough, but some subtle changes also have experts concerned. Most notably, more teens than ever are using the "rhythm method" to prevent pregnancy, and a growing number of teen girls approve of underage childbirth. The report, compiled by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, is based on interviews with 2,767 teens, ages 15 to 19, between 2006 and 2008. At the foundation of the report ...

Kiddie Condoms: The Newest Weapon Against Teen Pregnancy

Apparently, sometimes size really does matter. A Swiss company has created an extra-small condom aimed at 12-to-14-year-old boys. It's called -- wait for it -- the Hotshot. ...
