Experts say this generation may be more cautious than their predecessors, more aware of sexually spread diseases. Or perhaps emphasis on abstinence in the past decade has had some influence. Or maybe they're just too busy. AP This graphic shows the percentage change in sexual behavior between 2002 and 2006-2008 among people ages 15-24. "It's not even on my radar," said 17-year-old Abbey King of Hinsdale, Ill., a competitive swimmer who starts her ...
Is abstinence the new normal? The teen pregnancy rate hit a record low in 2009, according to new data just released by the National Center for Health Statistics. The birth rate last year fell to 39.1 births per 1,000 teens, a decrease of 6 percent from 2008. What's keeping America's teens childless? Surge Desk takes a look at a few of the competing explanations. No one's having babies at any age American teens could just be emulating their older role models; hardly anyone had babies in 2009. Birth rates also fell for women in their early 20s and for women in their late 20s and early ...
WASHINGTON (Nov. 22) -- Think you know it all when it comes to sex? Well, a majority of the baby boomers think they've learned just about all there is to know on the subject - and more women than men are confident of their knowledge - according to a new Associated Press-LifeGoesStrong.com poll. Among people aged 45 to 65, 59 percent of women think they know all about sex, while just 48 percent of men share that confidence level. "I don't think a single person in the whole world knows all there is about sex," commented Debby Herbenick of the Center for Sexual Health Promotion at Indiana ...
NEW YORK (Oct. 4) -- The male-female orgasm gap. The sex lives of 14-year-olds. An intriguing breakdown of condom usage rates, by age and ethnicity, with teens emerging as more safe-sex-conscious than boomers. That's just a tiny sampling of the data being unveiled Monday in what the researchers say is the largest, most comprehensive national survey of Americans' sexual behavior since 1994. Filling 130 pages of a special issue of the Journal of Sexual Medicine, the study offers detailed findings on how often Americans have sex, with whom, and how they respond. In all, 5,865 people, ranging in ...
(Sept. 15) -- One-third of American teens aren't learning about contraceptives during sex education classes, but most of them are getting schooled in "how to say no" to sex. A report on sex education programs for teenagers, issued today by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, offers a glimpse into today's classrooms, community centers and churches, where youth are learning the ins and outs of copulation. And although around half of teens in grades nine through 12 report being sexually active, only one-third are learning about condoms, birth control pills and other contraceptive ...
(Sept. 3) -- Delaware Republican Christine O'Donnell has become a tea party favorite. The Senate candidate says that Rep. Mike Castle, also a Republican, is no different from the Democratic aspirant, New Castle County Executive Chris Coons. And on one issue at least, O'Donnell, really does distinguish herself from her opponents: masturbation. Back in the 1990s, O'Donnell was the president of a Christian-right group called Saviors Alliance for Lifting the Truth (SALT), and The Huffington Post has taken a look back at her television appearances from the time preaching religious conservatism. On ...
(July 29) -- Medical school students aren't adequately prepared to talk to patients about sex -- because they're not leaving college well-versed in carnal matters. And yes, that goes for the bedroom and the classroom. A survey published in the August issue of Academic Medicine polled 2,261 medical students in an effort to determine just how confident they were in sex chatter with patients. The results offer a glimpse into the high-stress academic lifestyle at medical schools across the country -- and suggest that med students might need to get a little bit freakier to offer applicable ...

PROVINCETOWN, Mass. (June 24) - A new policy in a Massachusetts public school district that makes condoms available to all students, even those in elementary school, is drawing criticism from some who say it goes too far. Provincetown School Board Chairman Peter Grosso says because there is no set age when sexual activity starts, the committee decided not to set an age for condom availability. Under the policy, any student requesting a condom from a school nurse must first receive counseling, which includes information on abstinence. The policy does not require the school to contact ...
(June 2) -- Attitudes among American teens about birth control, sexual activity and pregnancy have remained largely unchanged since 2002, according to a new federal report. Stalled progress is bad enough, but some subtle changes also have experts concerned. Most notably, more teens than ever are using the "rhythm method" to prevent pregnancy, and a growing number of teen girls approve of underage childbirth. The report, compiled by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, is based on interviews with 2,767 teens, ages 15 to 19, between 2006 and 2008. At the foundation of the report ...
