An Oklahoma federal judge has put a hold on Ballot Question 755 -- aka the "Shariah law amendment" -- which forbids state courts from implementing international laws, including Islamic Shariah law. The permanent injunction will grant the judge additional time to consider issues surrounding the amendment. Oklahoma federal Judge Vicki Miles-LaGrange previously blocked implementation of the ballot measure, which was approved by voters in early November, in light of a lawsuit filed by the Council on American-Islamic Relations aiming to nullify the law. That motion ...
(Nov. 29) -- In early November, 70 percent of Oklahoma voters approved changing the state's constitution to instruct state courts to rely on federal and state law when deciding cases and not to use (1) international law or (2) Shariah, the sacred law of Islam. Less than a month later, a federal judge ruled that it is unconstitutional for the Oklahoma voters to so restrict its judges. Sponsors of the law pointed to a New Jersey decision in 2009. A Moroccan man raped his wife, and the judge refused to issue a restraining order because of the man's religious belief that his wife must submit to ...
(Nov. 8) -- Will Shariah law in Oklahoma resume on Tuesday? A federal judge temporarily blocked the implementation of state ballot measure 755, a controversial new law that officially bans state courts from considering Shariah law when rendering decisions. Judge Vicki Miles-LaGrange ruled that the voter initiative that singles out Islamic law should not be certified into law until another hearing takes place on Nov. 22. Calling the measure a violation of the establishment clause of the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution, the Council on American-Islamic Relations filed a lawsuit last ...

On Tuesday, for instance, voters in Oklahoma passed State Question 755, aka the "Shariah law amendment," which changed the state constitution so that Oklahoma courts are now forbidden from "considering or using" both international law and Shariah law when making their decisions. Here's some of the text of the measure: International law is also known as the law of nations. It deals with the conduct of international organizations and ...
If, as my colleague Sarah Wildman reports, the Francophonic world is intent on curbing expressions of fundamentalist Islam belief, then the radical Muslim world is taking no prisoners with the West, either. Last week, the Somalian fundamentalist Islamic group Hizbul Islam announced that music of any kind is "un-Islamic," warning of "serious consequences" for those who dare to violate their decree. In response, radio stations all over the country, including those run by the moderate Muslim transitional government, cut all music from their broadcasts. Even intro music for news reports was ...
Mullah Omar, the supreme leader of the Taliban, has indicated he no longer aims to rule Afghanistan and could be willing to engage in peace talks with the West, according to two of the movement's senior commanders. In an interview with The Times of London, the two men relayed a message from the Taliban's ruling council that Mullah Omar was prepared to enter into "sincere and honest" negotiations. Mullah Omar "is no longer interested in being involved in politics or government," one of the commanders, speaking anonymously, told the newspaper. The commanders said the Taliban's military ...
