Iranian Students Hurl Firebombs at Saudi Embassy

TEHRAN, Iran -- Scores of Iranian students have attacked the Saudi Arabian embassy with firebombs to protest the Gulf country's role in cracking down on anti-government protesters in Bahrain. The official IRNA news agency says protesters tried to attach a flag of the Lebanese group Hezbollah to the embassy's gate Monday, but were prevented by police. Protesters chanted slogans against Saudi and Bahraini leaders, both followers of Sunni Islam. Iran, predominantly Shiite Muslim, has denounced the deployment of a Saudi-led force to help prop up Bahrain's monarchy. A government crackdown against ...

Bahrain Protesters Call for Ouster for Royal Family

MANAMA, Bahrain -- A group of protesters Monday called for the ouster of Bahrain's entire ruling monarchy as part of sweeping demands to call off a weeklong uprising in the tiny, but strategically important Gulf nation. Tensions are still high in Bahrain after seesaw battles that saw riot police open fire on protesters trying to reclaim landmark Pearl Square last week. At least eight people have been killed and hundreds injured in the clashes since the unrest spilling across the Arab world reached the Gulf last week. Abdul Redha Mohammed Hassan, 32, who was shot in the head by security ...

Is More at Stake for US in Tiny Bahrain Than in Egypt?

Is More at Stake for US in Tiny Bahrain Than in Egypt?

WASHINGTON -- Most Americans couldn't find Bahrain on a map before this week, but the escalating violence unfolding in the tiny island monarchy could do more damage to U.S. interests in the Middle East than the more high-profile revolution in Egypt. Bahrain is a tiny group of islands that could fit nearly six times over into Rhode Island. The country has been the headquarters of the U.S. Navy's 5th Fleet since shortly after World War II and is a major resupply and refueling depot for warships supporting troops in Iraq and Afghanistan and patrolling the pirate-infested waters off ...

Why Is Everyone So Scared of Little Bahrain?

Tensions have reached the boiling point in the tiny, but strategically crucial, island nation of Bahrain as a surprise and shocking crackdown by military police left at least four people dead today. The violence in Pearl Square, which included an attack on ABC News reporter Miguel Marquez, prompted U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton to phone her Bahraini counterpart to urge restraint. Protests inspired by the recent revolutions in Egypt and Tunisia inspired the Shiite Muslims in Bahrain, long a key U.S. ally, to begin demonstrating on Monday. The Shiites, who comprise ...

Bahrain Protests Update [VIDEOS]

As anti-government sentiment spreads across the Middle East, two people have been killed in Bahrain, sources say. On Monday protesters filled the streets outside the Persian Gulf state's capital of Manama during a "day of rage." Police reportedly responded with tear gas and rubber bullets, fatally wounding one protester and injuring up to 20 more. The Christian Science Monitor reports that a second protester was killed today during a funeral procession for the individual killed Monday. According to Al-Jazeera, riot police fired bird shot at the procession, and at least 25 people were ...

Hezbollah Candidate to Form Lebanese Government

BEIRUT -- The candidate backed by Iranian-allied Hezbollah was designated Tuesday to form Lebanon's next government, angering Sunnis who protested the rising power of the Shiite militant group by burning tires and torching a van belonging to Al-Jazeera. The president appointed Harvard-educated billionaire businessman and former premier Najib Mikati as prime minister-designate after a majority of lawmakers voted for him. Mikati defeated U.S.-backed Saad Hariri, who was prime minister from 2009 until Hezbollah forced the unity government he led to collapse two weeks ago. "My hand is extended ...

Car Bombs Kill Shiite Pilgrims as Violence Increases in Iraq

BAGHDAD -- Two car bombs struck Shiite pilgrims Monday in an Iraqi holy city, killing at least 18 people as crowds massed for religious rituals marking the end of a 40-day mourning period for the Islamic sect's most beloved saint. The blasts in Karbala were the latest in nearly a week of attacks that have killed at least 159 people. The uptick in violence has shattered a lengthy period of calm and raised anew concerns about the readiness of Iraqi forces to take over their own security ahead of a full withdrawal by the U.S. military. The first attack occurred about 7 a.m. in a parking lot ...

Tamara Chalabi Writes of Another Iraq Before the War

Tamara Chalabi Writes of Another Iraq Before the War

WASHINGTON -- To most Americans, "Iraq" is a war. But for Tamara Chalabi, it is more than "a desert of tanks, screaming women and barefoot children." It is the homeland she never knew, "a modern state, an ancient land, a nation, a word, a song, a river, a grave, a shrine, a statue of a deer." As the last U.S. troops prepare to leave Iraq at the end of the year, Chalabi seeks to reclaim a country "hijacked" by the 2003 invasion in a new book, "Late for Tea at the Deer Palace: The Lost Dreams of My Iraqi Family." The memoir is "my way of connecting with the country and also my attempt to show ...

At Least 50 Killed in Blasts Targeting Shiite Pilgrims in Iraq

At least 50 people died in a series of blasts in the Iraqi holy city of Karbala today, as suicide bombers targeted Shiite pilgrims in the third attack in recent days. More than 100 others were injured by the car bombs, and the death toll is expected to rise, police said. The bombs were detonated along the route of the yearly pilgrimage of Shiite Muslims to Karbala for Arbaeen, a religious festival that has been a frequent target of Sunni insurgents attempting to inflame sectarian tensions and undermine the government. No group has claimed responsibility for the attacks, but Iraqi officials ...

Sunnis Miss Out Again in New Iraqi Government

BAGHDAD (Nov. 11) -- The deal on a new Iraqi government appears to sideline the country's Sunni minority yet again while returning Shiite Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki to power. The deal confirmed early Thursday by Massoud Barzani, president of Iraq's autonomous Kurdish region, was hammered out after eight months of political deadlock following inconclusive elections on March 7. A Sunni-backed coalition led by former Prime Minister Ayad Allawi won the most seats in the vote, but Allawi missed out on bids for both the prime minister job and the presidency. Barzani confirmed the Kurds, the ...
