For the first time, Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi has admitted to paying a teenage erotic dancer $87,000, but insists the whopping payment wasn't for sex but to save her from a life of prostitution. Mired in a sex scandal that threatens to end his political career, Berlusconi acknowledged that he gave Moroccan-born Karima El Mahroug, aka "Ruby the Heart Stealer," a huge sum of money. But he said it was to pay for laser hair removal equipment for a beauty parlor the 17-year-old dreamed of opening with a friend. ROME -- Premier Silvio Berlusconi has sat down with the enemy, telling an opposition newspaper that he is too old to have had all the sexual encounters he is accused of by Italian prosecutors. The 74-year-old faces trial in Milan next month over charges he paid for sex with a Moroccan minor and used his influence to try to cover it up. In court documents, prosecutors have identified 33 women, including the Moroccan teenager, who allegedly prostituted themselves during parties at Berlusconi's villa near Milan. Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi was in good condition today following a four-hour operation to repair damage to his jaw and teeth that he suffered in 2009 when a man threw a statuette at him. Berlusconi "underwent a maxillofacial operation with bone transplant and implant," his doctor, Alberto Zangrillo, said in a statement released by the prime minister's office. He was in good condition, his doctor said, and was recovering at his villa outside Milan, Agence France-Presse reported. ...

The 18-year-old Moroccan, whose real name is Karima El Mahroug, was paid 40,000 euros -- more than $55,000 -- to accompany Austrian real estate mogul Richard Lugner, 78, to the swanky event, which is the highlight of the social season, The Independent said. The teenage belly dancer at the heart of Silvio Berlusconi's latest sex scandal says the Italian prime minister lavished her with gifts because he felt sorry for her. But prosecutors now say they believe that so-called sympathy was to the tune of nearly $300,000. Berlusconi is slated to go on trial in April, charged with paying for sex with an underage girl and abuse of power. The case stems from his meetings with Karima el-Mahroug, better known as "Ruby the Heart Stealer," a Moroccan dancer who was 17 when they were introduced. Prosecutors allege that Berlusconi paid the girl for sex and ...
