Army Announces iPhone Blogging App for Soldiers

The military has long had a love-hate relationship with social media, striving to take advantage of Internet tools to promote its message while also wary of an online free-for-all it can't control. Now, in an effort to extend the use of social media for recruiting, the Army today released a free iPhone app and mobile website that would allow any soldier with a smart phone to blog from anywhere. The new blogging app, dubbed "Army Strong Stories," will allow soldiers to share videos, pictures and text from their iPhone. The mobile website is designed to work on a number of smart phones, ...

Apple iPhone Mini: Will Smaller Be Better?

Sources tell The Wall Street Journal that Apple is developing a smaller, cheaper version of the iPhone -- call it the "iPhone nano," if you will. Last week TechCrunch and Bloomberg reported hearing similar rumors. Now the WSJ has heard from insiders who have seen prototypes that the new device would cost about half as much as a regular iPhone and be half as large. Cult of Mac has more details from another source (keep in mind that these are all rumors for now, since Apple hasn't officially confirmed or denied anything): Apple decided to lose some of the memory, which is by far the most ...

Verizon iPhone 4 Arrival: 3 Reasons It's Such a Big Deal

On Thursday, Verizon will start taking orders for the iPhone 4 from customers not on its network. With so much written over the deal between Apple and Verizon, it can be tempting to believe that the union of the two companies has been vastly overblown, but Surge Desk runs down the main reasons the Verizon iPhone is poised to reshape the smart phone landscape in lasting ways. 1. Sales While Apple is not exactly hurting for cash these days, the CDMA-compatible version of the iPhone will represent a major financial boost for both Apple and Verizon. Within two hours of becoming available to ...

Mubarak Regime Forces Cell Phone Companies to Text Its Messages

LONDON -- Anti-government protesters in Egypt used their cell phones to organize and broadcast their uprising to the world. Now the embattled regime of President Hosni Mubarak has realized that it can also use the same technology to fight its opponents. Over the past five days, Egyptians have been hit with a steady stream of pro-Mubarak text messages. "Youth of Egypt, beware rumors and listen to the sound of reason -- Egypt is above all so preserve it," read one text, according to a photograph and translation posted on this Flickr account. Another, received Sunday by an Associated Press ...

Google Latitude: Should We Be Happy About an App That Tracks Your iPhone?

(Dec. 14) -- Geo-positioning applications for smart phones are all the rage these days, but Google is taking this technology to a new level with Google Latitude for the iPhone, which lets users share and track each other's locations in real time. Foursquare, Gowalla and similar social-networking applications work by harnessing the global-positioning chips within smart phones, allowing users to "check in" at various locations, like home addresses or restaurants. If any friends are logged in to the application on their own phones, they can see the user's exact location. Google Latitude for the ...

When Will Google's New Laptop-Killing, Chrome-Based Netbooks Drop?

(Nov. 2) -- New netbook computers may be on the way from Google, you know, the search company that's lately been getting into more outlandish projects including self-driving cars. The search giant plans to introduce a series of its own Chrome operating system-based, ultra-small PCs just in time for the holiday shopping season, according to a Digitimes report. The project, which has many tech bloggers revisiting the generally disappointing performance of Google's Nexus One smart phone, will be manufactured by Inventec and have an initial production of 60,000 to 70,000 units. The Taiwanese ...

Health Apps Not a Popular Prescription for iPhone Users

(Oct. 22) -- Heaps of health-related apps, many of them from trusted sources and institutions, are available for iPhone users with little more than a few taps and a 99-cent payment. But few people seem interested in getting medical input, fitness advice or diet tips from their smart phones, according to a new national poll of 3,001 adults by the Pew Internet & American Life Project. Only 17 percent of cell phone users have sought health information on their phones, the study concluded. And a mere 9 percent take advantage of health apps on a routine basis. Those are paltry percentages, ...
