Click here to visit the new home of Politics Daily! The Vatican announced Monday that the world's cardinals, assembling in Rome next week to welcome two dozen new members to their ranks, will gather a day early for "reflection and prayer" on several topics, including the clergy sexual abuse crisis. The late Pope John Paul II brought together American cardinals at the Vatican for two days in 2002 to discuss the scandals and a response, efforts that were criticized as too little or too late. And bishops of various countries -- such as Ireland -- have met with Vatican officials periodically to discuss efforts to address the global crisis. But ...
(Sept. 16) -- Before he landed today in Britain for a historic first-ever state visit, Pope Benedict XVI delivered his harshest comments yet about the Catholic Church's response to sex abuse, admitting that the hierarchy failed to act decisively against priests who rape or molest children. The pope acknowledged that "the authority of the church was not sufficiently vigilant and not sufficiently swift and decisive" against abusers. "I must say that these revelations were a shock for me, a great sadness," he said. Benedict also said the church's "first interest is the victims" rather than its ...
(Aug. 6) -- In a rare show of bipartisanship in Washington, the Senate voted unanimously to pass the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act. Among other things, the bill reauthorizes federal child nutrition programs, sets nutritional standards for food sold in schools and boosts reimbursement rates for school lunch programs. All to the good, as far as food security efforts go. But in part to help pay for the program, the Senate also approved $14 billion in cuts to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), more commonly referred to as food stamps. "This is essentially robbing Peter to ...
VATICAN CITY (July 15) -- The Vatican issued a new set of norms Thursday to respond to the worldwide clerical abuse scandal, cracking down on priests who rape and molest minors and the mentally disabled. The norms extend from 10 to 20 years the statute of limitations on priestly abuse and also codify for the first time that possessing or distributing child pornography is a canonical crime. But the document made no mention of the need for bishops to report abuse to police and doesn't include any "one-strike and you're out" policy as demanded by some victims' groups. The document also listed ...
VATICAN CITY -- Facing heavy pressure to take a personal role in the ongoing clergy sex abuse crisis, Pope Benedict XVI on Sunday met privately with eight men who said that as children they were sexually abused by priests in Malta, the island nation Benedict visited on Sunday. According to a statement from the Vatican about the meeting with victims, the pope "was deeply moved by their stories and expressed his shame and sorrow over what victims and their families have suffered." "He prayed with them and assured them that the Church is doing, and will continue to do, all in its power to ...
As this holiday weekend wrapped up, The New York Times posted an update on the rising number of Americans dependent on food stamps. According to the Times, one in eight Americans are currently on food stamps, and the majority of them are children, with one in four youngsters receiving food assistance through the Supplemental Nutritional Assistance Program (SNAP). If you calculate the number of children who will have been on at some point before they reach the age of 20, it moves up to (approximately) half. But, with both a marked rise in the number of Americans using food stamps and increased ...
