States Seek to Make It Safer to Find Love Online

HARTFORD, Conn. - Something just didn't seem right when Ilana Angel met her Internet date at a bar. He furtively looked around the room and immediately suggested they go someplace else in his car, leaving hers behind at the bar. Aware of the risks of that come with looking for love online, Angel thought better of the suggestion and said no. "People are shady," said Angel, who writes a blog in Los Angeles about dating and being over 40. "You just have to be aware and you have to be careful." Amid accounts of sex offenders using matchmaking sites to find victims, lawmakers in several states ...

Young People Using Social Media for More Than Just Socializing

WASHINGTON -- Young people use social media like Facebook and Twitter for more than simply staying in touch with their friends; they're also a means to make school and career connections, according to an Associated Press-Viacom poll. Four out of 5 high school and college students say websites are an excellent or good way to interact with fellow students, and a bit fewer -- about 7 in 10 -- say they're equally good for getting information on class assignments or school events, or to form study groups and collaborate with peers. Just over half say the Internet is useful to look up ratings on ...

"This is the first case like this my department has handled," Chief Randy Cox, of the Somerset Borough Police Department, told AOL News. The site, which will link to video highlights of John Paul's 27-year papacy, is designed to promote the May 1 beatification. But it may well continue beyond given the global and enduring interest in the late pontiff, Vatican officials told The Associated Press. Pennsylvania Teacher Strikes Nerve With 'Lazy Whiners' Blog

FEASTERVILLE, Pa. - A high school English teacher in suburban Philadelphia who was suspended for a profanity-laced blog in which she called her young charges "disengaged, lazy whiners" is driving a sensation by daring to ask: Why are today's students unmotivated - and what's wrong with calling them out? Pope Benedict: Mind Your Manners on Social Networks

Pope Benedict XVI, who could be considered head of one of the world's oldest social networks, gave his blessing to social media today but told users to mind their manners and warned against using its "extraordinary potential" for selfish ends. While "inviting Christians" to join online social networks, none of which he identified by name, Benedict cautioned them against substituting a virtual world filled with superficial relationships for the real thing. "In the search for sharing, for 'friends,' there is the challenge to be authentic and faithful, and not give in to the illusion of ...

Can Larry Page Lead Google's Battle Against Facebook and Apple?

The tech world is still coming to terms with the news that Google co-founder Larry Page will become the new company's new CEO, taking the place of Eric Schmidt. Says TechCrunch, "This is clearly Schmidt being removed from power. And again, it appears to be because things just weren't getting done the way the company would have liked." The Guardian's Charles Arthur agrees that Schmidt's missteps necessitated his departure from the top spot, pointing to "myriads of little failures," such as the unsuccessful launches of Google Wave and Google Buzz. Arthur also points out that Google's core ...

'Facebook Shutting Down' and 3 Other Rumors About the Site

Let's just be clear: Facebook is not shutting down. A ridiculous rumor began circulating over the weekend that the Internet's premier social network will be closing up shop on March 15, 2011. And while, hypothetically speaking, pulling the plug on Facebook would be a fascinating experiment in drastically altering how people communicate, the company denies it has any plans to stop operating. According to one theory, the rumor is the result of a satirical article published by tabloid site the Weekly World News. Mashable reached out to Facebook Director of Corporate Communications Larry Yu, who ...
