Brave World Travelers Take 90-Day 'No Baggage Challenge'

Plenty of people travel light, but two California vacationers are trekking the world with just the shirts on their backs. Jennifer Lau, 21, and Marcus Fernandez, 23, are in the middle of a 90-day trip that will bring them to 12 countries on six continents. And the only things they've packed are in their pockets. "People tend to overpack for travel, so we have realized how little you actually need to bring with you," Lau and Fernandez said in an e-mail from the first leg of their trip in South America. "With bags, people pack things for every scenario they could be in, a lot of 'just in case' ...

The Weird World of Steven Tyler

The Weird World of Steven Tyler

"American Idol" isn't exactly known for being edgy or weird, but judging by new judge Steven Tyler, times they are a-changin'. Tyler spoke briefly with the press Tuesday about the brand-new season of "American Idol," which kicks off at 8 tonight on Fox. Instead of sugar-coating his new job on the show or touting specific contestants, the outspoken, clearly unpredictable Aerosmith rocker said what he wanted, when he wanted. Even if it made no sense. Michael Becker, FOX Steven Tyler and Jennifer Lopez are the latest celebrities to join Randy Jackson and Ryan Seacrest on "American ...

Early T. Rex Ancestor Found in South America

WASHINGTON - Back at the dawn of the dinosaur era, a quick-moving predator set the stage for the famous and fearsome giants that followed in its footsteps, according to new research. "It was a little dinosaur, but it carried a big evolutionary stick," said Paul C. Sereno of the University of Chicago, a leader of the team that discovered Eodromaeus. The 4-foot-long hunter lived 230 million years ago in what is now South America and appears to be the ancestor of such creatures as Tyrannosaurus rex. Todd Marshall, AP An illustration shows Eodromaeus, which scientists believe was the ...

My Wish for 2011: More Progress for Women

My wish for the new year, the dawn of the second decade of the 21st century, is for women around the globe to progress significantly in both public and private arenas. On Dec. 10, the world observed Human Rights Day, commemorating the 1948 adoption by the U.N. General Assembly of the inalienable rights of mankind. The "Universal Declaration of Human Rights" included a commitment to end discrimination against women. Courtesy of Talia Carner Talia Carner's 2011 wish is for more progress for women. Sixty-two years later, rural women produce nearly 70 percent of the globe's food but ...

Meteors, Full Lunar Eclipse to Dazzle December Sky

(Dec. 9) -- Holiday stargazers are in for a December treat: a huge meteor shower and the year's only full lunar eclipse. The annual Geminid meteor shower -- clusters of space rock hurtling toward the Earth's atmosphere and burning up on contact -- occurs around the end of our calendar. The effect is that of thousands of shooting stars streaking across the night sky. The shower gets its name from Gemini, the constellation of stars from which it appears to emerge. The Geminids are unusual in that they're thought to be the remnants of a passing asteroid, not a comet. Stan Honda, AFP / Getty ...

Ecuador's Rebellion Quelled, but Not Its Fiscal Woes

(Oct. 1) -- Ecuadorean President Rafael Correa said today he would offer "no pardon or forgiveness" to the national police force for its role in what he claimed was an attempt to overthrow him. But while he has regained the upper hand, Correa is still hard-pressed for answers to the severe economic problems that lurk behind Thursday's violent clash, which killed at least three people, according to The Associated Press. Correa had to be rescued by the military after police barricaded him Thursday in a Quito hospital, where he was treated for inhaling tear gas police fired at him in a ...

After President's Rescue, Ecuador Under State of Siege

QUITO, Ecuador (Oct. 1) -- Ecuador was under a state of siege Friday, the streets quiet with the military in charge of public order, after soldiers rescued President Rafael Correa from a hospital where he'd been surrounded by police who roughed him up and tear-gassed him earlier. The chief of the national police, Gen. Freddy Martinez, gave Correa his resignation because of Thursday's revolt, police spokesman Richard Ramirez told The Associated Press. Correa and his ministers called the events - in which insurgents also paralyzed the nation with airport shutdowns and highway blockades - an ...
