That's because part of it will be from space itself: The International Space Station, to be specific. On April 12, Anderson will be taking part in a duet with U.S. astronaut Col. Catherine Coleman, also a flutist, to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Russian astronaut Yuri Gagarin's first manned space flight in 1961. Here's the catch: Anderson will be performing on stage in Perm, Russia, while Coleman orbits 250 miles above Earth. ...
CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. - NASA is investigating after cocaine was found in a facility at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida. NASA spokesman Allard Beutel said Tuesday that 4.2 grams of a white powdery substance was found last week at the NASA facility, though he would not say where. It tested positive for cocaine. It's not the first time cocaine has been found at the space center. A small amount was discovered in January 2010 in a secure part of a hangar that housed space shuttle Discovery. A spokeswoman from NASA's Inspector General Office in Washington declined to comment on how that case ...
VANDENBERG AIR FORCE BASE, Calif. - A rocket that blasted off early Friday carrying an Earth-observation satellite has failed to reach orbit, NASA said. The Taurus XL rocket carrying NASA's Glory satellite lifted off about 2:10 a.m. PST from Vandenberg Air Force Base, officials said . CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. -- Space shuttle Discovery arrived at the International Space Station on Saturday, making its final visit before being parked at a museum. "What took you guys so long?" asked the space station's commander, Scott Kelly. Discovery should have come and gone last November, but was grounded by fuel tank cracks. It blasted off Thursday with just two seconds to spare after being held up by a balky ground computer. "Yeah, I don't know, we kind of waited until like the last two seconds," said shuttle commander Steven Lindsey. The linkup occurred 220 miles above ...
WASHINGTON -- Scientists have estimated the first cosmic census of planets in our galaxy and the numbers are astronomical: at least 50 billion planets in the Milky Way. At least 500 million of those planets are in the not-too-hot, not-too-cold zone where life could exist. The numbers were extrapolated from the early results of NASA's planet-hunting Kepler telescope. Kepler science chief William Borucki says scientists took the number of planets they found in the first year of searching a small part of the night sky and then made an estimate on how likely stars are to have planets. Kepler ...
Give him some credit. Give her some credit. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, shot in the head on Jan. 8 in Tucson, Arizona, has made so much progress in a Houston rehabilitation center that her husband, astronaut Mark Kelly, decided to leave his wife's side and join his crew aboard the space shuttle Endeavour, scheduled to launch in April. And here come the critics, right on time: Mark Kelly is selfish, he's ego-driven, he cares more about his career than he does his wife. How can he even think of abandoning her in her fragile state? Hey, people! Mark Kelly is going back to work, like thousands of ...
HOUSTON -- The astronaut husband of wounded Rep. Gabrielle Giffords said his wife would be "very comfortable" with his decision to go back into space and he expects her to be at his launch in April. Space shuttle commander Mark Kelly wouldn't go into details about her condition during a news conference Friday, and deflected questions about how he knows she supports his choice to fly. "I know her very well and she would be very comfortable with the decision that I made," he said. Kelly took a leave from training after Giffords was gunned down in Tucson, Ariz., on Jan. 8. NASA announced ...
