Lost In Translation: American Decodes Weird Spanish Slang

Lost In Translation: American Decodes Weird Spanish Slang

Learning a foreign language is hard enough. But if that language is riddled with weird slang terms and ever-changing funny phrases, you may wind up lost in translation. That's exactly what happened to former Maryland resident Jared Romey, author of Spanish slang books "Speaking Argento," "Speaking Boricua" and the most recent "Speaking Chileno" (RIL Editores) -- guides to understanding current slang in Argentina, Puerto Rico and Chile, respectively. Back in 1997, Romey moved from the U.S. to Chile thinking he could get by solely on the years of Spanish language classes he had taken. He was ...

Weird Christmas Custom: Spot the Pooping Peasant

Weird Christmas Custom: Spot the Pooping Peasant

Holiday traditions such as wrapping gifts and eating fruitcake may suck, but nothing is crappier than a bizarre Christmas custom practiced in Spain. While a typical Nativity scene in most parts of the world usually includes figurines of baby Jesus, Joseph, Mary and their entourage of Wise Men and farm animals, folks in the Catalonia region of Spain add their own weird twist. If you look really closely at Christmas Nativities in Catalan cities like Barcelona or Tarragona, chances are you'll find a strange figurine of a man squatting and pooping somewhere in the manger. There's even a little ...

Iker Casillas Fernandez Career Timeline

Iker Casillas Fernandez Career Timeline

(July 12) -- Fittingly, Madrid native Iker Casillas Fernandez wears the number "1" on his jersey: The 29-year-old goalkeeper was perhaps the single-biggest factor in the Spanish soccer team's victory over the Netherlands in the World Cup final Sunday. Courtesy of Surge Desk, a timeline of Casillas' career: 1990 Casillas began his soccer career at the age of 9 as a junior squad goalkeeper for Real Madrid. 1997 At 16, he became a member of the Spanish squad that placed second at the FIFA U-17 World Championship. 1998 Casillas, then 17, was bumped up to senior side goalkeeper for Real ...

Census: Foreign-Language Households on Rise in US

(April 28) -- The number of U.S. households in which languages other than English are spoken is growing rapidly. A new study published by the Census Bureau finds that the number of Americans age 5 and older who regularly speak non-English languages at home grew by 140 percent from 1980 to 2007. During that same period, the country's population grew by just 34 percent. The languages with the biggest percentage gains were Vietnamese, which rose by 511 percent over the 27-year period, and Spanish, which rose by 211 percent. According to the Census Bureau's figures, approximately 280 million ...

Briefing: White House Press Secretary Jokes About Conservative Tea Parties

At today's White House press briefing, Press Secretary Robert Gibbs was generally dismissive of the "Tea Party Movement," re-dubbed "Tea-bagging" by Fox News' Griff Jenkins and flogged by MSNBC. He also tossed out a strange joke:(Transcript)Q Thanks, Robert. Tomorrow is tax day and a number of conservative groups are organizing these so called "tea parties" across the country; there are going to be grassroots uprising revolts against the administration's policies so far. Is the President aware that these are going on and do you have any reaction to this? MR. GIBBS: I don't know if the ...

Obama Embarrassed by Americans

Obama Embarrassed by Americans

Somehow I don't think this YouTube will go over well in certain parts of the country. In some others, it will be fine. But as RedState notes, the kicker for me is when Obama says he is embarrassed by Americans. Now, I understand the point he is making, but considering the plight of the Dixie Chicks, and his wife (being proud of America for the first time) the words embarrassment and America should not be in the same paragraph in any of his speeches. I'm becoming more and more of the opinion that Obama does not do well off the cuff. On the English only stuff, it's not something I ever worry ...
