Athletes and Businesspeople Give 9-Year-Old Hero New Leg

A group of Southern athletes and businesspeople is banding together to provide a young hero with a new leg. AOL News shared Anaiah Rucker's story in March. The courageous 9-year-old straight-A student from Georgia pushed her sister out of the way of an oncoming truck in February. Bearing the brunt of the truck's force, Anaiah saved 5-year-old Camry's life, but broke her neck and lost a kidney and her left leg. Anaiah matter-of-factly spoke about her heroism to the "Today" show's Ann Curry. Her sister needed help, so Anaiah helped. Strangers Help Madison Girl Walk Again: ...

MLB Takes Over Operation of Los Angeles Dodgers

NEW YORK -- Major League Baseball is taking the extraordinary step of assuming control of the Los Angeles Dodgers, a team increasingly paralyzed by its owners' bitter divorce. Once among baseball's glamour franchises, the Dodgers have been consumed by infighting since Jamie McCourt filed for divorce after 30 years of marriage in October 2009, one week after her husband fired her as the team's chief executive. Frank McCourt accused Jamie of having an affair with her bodyguard-driver and performing poorly at work. Lenny Ignelzi, AP Los Angeles Dodgers' Aaron Miles high-fives with ...

Along Gulf, Spill Still Defines State of Mind

ALONG THE GULF COAST -- In the small brick church just across the road from the chocolate waters of Bayou Lafourche, the Rev. Joseph Anthony Pereira unbuttons his collar as the last parishioners pull out of the lot. Tonight, nearly a year after the BP oil spill began, he's asked his congregation of shrimpers and oil industry workers to think about lessons learned when survival is in jeopardy. But Pereira doubts that many from the 5 p.m. Mass are ready to take his Lenten message to heart. "You speak about this to them because they forget what they went through," says Pereira, who pastors at ...

AP Source: Lance Armstrong Met Banned Doctor Before 2010 Tour

ROME -- Lance Armstrong and a banned Italian physician have met repeatedly in Europe since severing formal ties in 2004, including as recently as last year before Armstrong's final Tour de France, a high-ranking Italian law enforcement official told The Associated Press on Friday. Michele Ferrari was cleared in 2006 of criminal charges accusing him of distributing doping products to athletes, but he remains barred for life by the Italian Cycling Federation. Italian authorities suspect Ferrari of continuing to work with 20 to 30 top level cyclists despite his ban, including Armstrong, and are ...

Three Online Poker Houses Face Fraud Charges in NYC

NEW YORK -- The multibillion-dollar business of the three biggest Internet poker companies became a target of federal authorities before an indictment was unsealed Friday, charging 11 people with bank fraud and illegal gambling. Prosecutors in Manhattan said they've issued restraining orders against more than 75 bank accounts in 14 countries used by the poker companies, interrupting the illegal flow of billions of dollars. U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara said the defendants "concocted an elaborate criminal fraud scheme, alternately tricking some U.S. banks and effectively bribing others to ...

Mediation Resumes in NFL, Players Dispute

MINNEAPOLIS -- The NFL and its locked-out players started talking again, and they talked all day. The only sign of progress or productivity, though, was the nine hours or so both sides spent in the federal courthouse on Thursday. Sworn to secrecy about specifics of the court-ordered mediation, neither the league nor the players provided much insight about where they're at in their dispute over the division of this $9 billion business. They'll meet again on Friday. Commissioner Roger Goodell, Carolina Panthers owner Jerry Richardson, Kansas City Chiefs owner Clark Hunt, Pittsburgh Steelers ...

Bonds Guilty of Obstruction of Justice

SAN FRANCISCO -- A federal jury convicted Barry Bonds of a single charge of obstruction of justice Wednesday but failed to reach a verdict on the three counts at the heart of allegations that he knowingly used steroids and human growth hormone and lied to a grand jury about it. Following a 12-day trial and almost four full days of deliberation, the jury of eight women and four men could reach a unanimous verdict only on one of the four counts against Bonds. U.S. District Judge Susan Illston declared a mistrial on the others, a messy end to a case that put the slugger - and baseball itself - ...

Drivers Donate $61,000 for Giants Fan Beaten Into a Coma at Dodger Stadium

Motorists driving by Dodger Stadium on Monday donated $61,000 to help San Francisco paramedic Bryan Stow, the Giants fan who was beaten into a coma last month by two men. It was the second time in less than a month that the parking lot hosted a fundraiser -- on March 14, passing drivers and pedestrians helped victims of the Japanese earthquake and tsunami. Stow was severely beaten March 31 at the stadium by two men wearing Dodgers clothes and remains in a coma. No arrest has been made in connection with the attack. Donations were accepted between 8 a.m. and 3 p.m. with the final ...

Ramirez Avoids Drug Ban, at Ease With Retirement

NEW YORK -- Unwilling to face another drug ban, Manny Ramirez is leaving baseball and at peace with his decision while the sport confronts the specter of steroids again. "I'm at ease," Ramirez told ESPNdeportes.com by phone from his home in Miami. "God knows what's best (for me). I'm now an officially retired baseball player. I'll be going away on a trip to Spain with my old man." One of the game's great sluggers, Ramirez tested positive for a performance-enhancing substance and wasted little time in saying he was done with the game. Some in baseball were baffled that he would get ...

Rory McIlroy Avoids Meltdown, Keeps Masters Lead

AUGUSTA, Ga. -- Rory McIlroy fretted about an errant chip that nearly slid into the water, a few putts that didn't fall in the cup. That's about it. The 21-year-old from Northern Ireland put together another strong round at the Masters, shooting a 3-under 69 Friday that put him at the head of a hard-charging pack that included a bunch of youngsters, one older champion and a very familiar challenger, Tiger Woods. "I drove it good. I gave myself a lot of opportunities. I just didn't make as many putts as I would've liked on the back nine," McIlroy said. "But I can't really complain. I'm in ...
