All that stands in the way of the city hosting the 2012 Democratic National Convention are Cleveland, St. Louis and Minneapolis. Though Ohio, Missouri and Minnesota are also states with electoral votes the party craves, Charlotte likes being in the hunt. Private supporters of the idea have set up websites, a Facebook page, a Twitter feed and a YouTube channel with a video extolling the city's virtues, with plenty of images of office ...
Four cities will compete to host the 2012 Democratic National Convention, where the party will put forth its next candidate for president (presumably Barack Obama running for a second term). In an e-mail to party members, Democratic National Committee chairman Tim Kaine announced that Charlotte, N.C., Cleveland, Minneapolis, and St. Louis are in the running to host the event, which will be held the week of Sept. 3, 2012. "Throughout this summer, our team will visit these four cities to determine which is the best locale to host our 46th national convention," Kaine wrote. "We look forward ...
ST. LOUIS (Jan. 7) - A disgruntled worker embroiled in a pension dispute with his company showed up at the plant and opened fire Thursday, killing three people and wounding five before apparently killing himself. The shooting spree at ABB Group's plant sent frightened co-workers scrambling into closets and to the snow-covered roof for safety. Police declined to name the gunman, but he has widely been identified as 51-year-old Timothy Hendron of Webster Groves, a St. Louis suburb. Fire officials confirmed earlier Thursday that that was the name of the person police said they were ...
Take me out to the ballgame, take me out with the crowds . . . President Obama will be in the Fox broadcast booth at the 80th Major League Baseball All-Star game in St. Louis tomorrow, according to Sports Illustrated. ...
Sometimes it's hard to keep track of just how long it's been since a player has accomplished anything meaningful. Rick Ankiel is one of those players. Did you know it's been almost seven years since he's been any good? That it was way back in 2005 that he switched to the outfield? That he's 27 now? How did all of these facts escape me at once? The fact that he's still around the game at all is still impressive. Not only is he still around, but he's managed to catch Tony LaRussa's eye this spring, says the St. Louis Post-Dispatch: Ankiel drove one home run to left field and nearly hit two ...
Darryl Strawberry's history is no secret. Nearly everyone familiar with recent-era baseball knows Strawberry's story of limitless talent plagued by severe drug, alcohol and domestic abuse. What is likely less well known to fans is Strawberry's quiet resurrection in the small town of O'Fallen, Missouri. That story is the subject of this long magazine feature in the River Front Times, a St. Louis-based publication. Highlights:- Strawberry has apparently found a religious calling, thanks largely to a pastor that focuses on addiction-related temptation and religion's role in that temptation.- ...
I know that the game is scheduled only hours from now, and Sam has already previewed the game, and some people are already pulling into the Invesco Field parking lot to start their grills, radios, and televisions - but there's something that's been missing from all of our coverage here that I want to touch on quickly. After last week's embarassing loss to the Rams, almost all blame went to the offense. Afterall, they could only manage ten points, turned the ball over five times, and stayed on the field for just 27 minutes - and yet they were still very much in the game even late in the fourth ...
