Stem Cell Transplant 'Cures' Leukemia Patient of AIDS

Stem Cell Transplant 'Cures' Leukemia Patient of AIDS

(Dec. 15) -- Doctors in Germany report they have cured an HIV-positive American of the AIDS virus after performing a stem cell transplant to treat his leukemia. But experts caution that while the man's outcome seems promising, the risky procedure might not work on otherwise healthy people with HIV and probably won't yield an overall cure for AIDS. Still, if the patient's HIV doesn't resurface, this would mark the first time HIV has been wiped out in any patient. In 2007, Timothy Ray Brown received a stem cell transplant to treat his leukemia, a cancer of the blood. The procedure involves ...

Appeals Court OKs US-Funded Stem Cell Research for Now

Appeals Court OKs US-Funded Stem Cell Research for Now

WASHINGTON (Sept. 28) -- An appeals court ruled Tuesday that government funding of embryonic stem cell research can continue for now. The U.S. Court of Appeals in Washington granted the Obama administration's request to allow the funding from the National Institutes of Health while it appeals a judge's order blocking the research. The administration had argued that stopping the research while the case proceeds would irreparably harm scientific progress toward potentially lifesaving medical treatment. U.S. District Judge Royce Lamberth had blocked President Barack Obama's research funding ...

Court Puts Stay on Embryonic Stem Cell Research Ban

Court Puts Stay on Embryonic Stem Cell Research Ban

(Sept. 9) -- A federal appeals court decided today to temporarily lift the ban on federal funding of embryonic stem cell research while it considers an emergency motion filed by the Justice Department. U.S. District Judge Royce Lamberth ruled last month that government funding of embryonic stem cell research violated the Dickey-Wicker amendment, which prohibits federal funding of any research that destroys a human embryo. The decision threw a major wrench into ongoing research projects nationwide and stopped others in their tracks. When Lamberth refused to stay his ruling earlier this week, ...

Feds Appeal Ruling on Stem Cell Research Funding

Feds Appeal Ruling on Stem Cell Research Funding

WASHINGTON (Aug. 31) -- The Obama administration on Tuesday asked a federal judge to lift a restraining order that it says could undercut federally funded embryonic stem cell research. The Justice Department filed its request with U.S. District Judge Royce Lamberth only days after he blocked government funding of embryonic stem cell research. Medical researchers value stem cells because they are master cells that can turn into any tissue of the body, and they expect the research to eventually lead to cures for spinal cord injuries, Parkinson's disease and other ailments. Stopping the ...

Stem Cell Ruling to Be Appealed; Some Work to Stop

Stem Cell Ruling to Be Appealed; Some Work to Stop

WASHINGTON (Aug. 24) -- The government will quickly appeal a court ruling that undercut federally funded embryonic stem cell research, the Obama administration declared Tuesday, but dozens of experiments aimed at fighting spinal cord injuries, Parkinson's disease and other ailments probably will stop in the meantime. The White House and scientists said Monday's court ruling was broader than first thought because it would prohibit even the more restricted stem cell research allowed for the past decade under President George W. Bush's rules. The Justice Department said an appeal is expected ...

Government: Some Stem Cell Work OK Despite Court Ruling

Government: Some Stem Cell Work OK Despite Court Ruling

WASHINGTON (Aug. 24) -- The government says dozens of stem cell experiments will continue, despite a judge's ruling blocking taxpayer funding of the work, because the money already is in scientists' hands. But National Institutes of Health Director Francis Collins said dozens more studies of promising stem cell therapies - about $54 million worth - will have to stop because of the court ruling that temporarily forbids any additional money from being granted. A federal judge ruled on Monday that the stem cell research violated the will of Congress in prohibiting the destruction of human ...

Judge Temporarily Blocks Expansion of Stem Cell Research

WASHINGTON (Aug. 23) -- A federal judge on Monday temporarily blocked government rules expanding stem cell research, a blow to the Obama administration that could stall potentially lifesaving research. The nonprofit group Nightlight Christian Adoptions contends that the government's new guidelines will decrease the number of human embryos available for adoption and implantation. Nightlight helps individuals adopt human embryos that are being stored in fertilization clinics. The group provides domestic, international and embryo adoption services to families in all 50 states. A federal appeals ...

FDA Greenlights Geron to Begin First Human Trials of Embryonic Stem Cell Treatment

FDA Greenlights Geron to Begin First Human Trials of Embryonic Stem Cell Treatment

(July 30) -- The Food and Drug Administration has cleared biotech firm Geron to perform the first human trials of a medical treatment based on embryonic stem cells. Patients with recently sustained spinal cord injuries will be the first to undergo the company's stem cell therapy, called GRNOPC1. The trial was initially approved by the FDA in January 2009 but stalled shortly after due to safety concerns. Embryonic stem cells have been a focus of medical research in recent years because of their ability to be differentiated into any kind of cell. In this case, they'll be turned into precursors ...

A Victory for Stem Cell Research

A Victory for Stem Cell Research

The National Institutes of Health on Monday released new guidelines for embryonic stem cell research, opening up the field for existing lines of stem cells to make it into the lab. The president signed an executive order in March, ending the ban on federal funds for embryonic stem cell research and directing the NIH to come up with guidelines for their use. But, just how far the restrictions would be eased on embryonic stem cells -- the ones scientists believe are the most medically promising -- was uncertain. There was some concern among scientists that the new guidelines wouldn't go far ...

New Jersey Rep. Calls Obama 'The Abortion President'

New Jersey Rep. Calls Obama 'The Abortion President'

It doesn't happen every term, but many American presidents have found themselves the recipients of a snappy nickname. Some have been flattering, such as "The Great Communicator." Some have been a bit cruel, such as "Iron Butt." Still others have been downright profound, such as "The American Talleyrand."Well now our new president, Barack Obama, has a nickname to call his own, and it's courtesy of Rep. Chris Smith (R-NJ)... an outspoken congressman with a nickname of his own: "Who?"Smith, to honor Obama's executive order to expand stem cell research, bestowed the President with his new moniker ...
