Study: US Suicide Rate Rises, Falls With Economy

America's suicide rate rises and falls in relation to how well the economy is doing, according to the first-ever study to compare age-specific suicide rates to U.S. business cycles. The study, titled "Impact of Business Cycles on the U.S. Suicide Rates, 1928-2007," was conducted by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and published online in the American Journal of Public Health. Gay Bullying Deaths and Religion: Are Believers the Problem or the Solution?

The national heartbreak and ongoing furor over the suicide of Tyler Clementi, the New Jersey college freshman who was humiliated when two other students secretly videotaped and broadcast on the Internet his tryst with another man, has cast a harsh light on the scourge of bullying, especially when it targets gay and lesbian youth. But Clementi's death last month, following suicides by several other homosexual teens in recent weeks, has also prompted a sharp debate in religious communities, a discussion that includes an unusual degree of soul-searching in addition to the more typical ...

What's Behind the Rise in Military Suicides?

(Sept. 30) -- After four apparent suicides in a single weekend, troops and their families are reeling -- but they need to be braced for more. That was the warning from Adm. Mike Mullen, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, at a conference this morning. "The emergency issue right now is suicides,'' Mullen told reporters. "I think we are going to see a growth in that before we see a decline." What's Behind the Increase? In part, it's the fact so many troops have been fighting for so long. The risk of developing mental health problems, most notably post-traumatic stress disorder, ...

Amid Lack of Jobs, Suicide Hot Line Calls Surge

LOS ANGELES (July 6) -- In one of the darkest tallies of the nation's still-sputtering recession, experts say financial desperation has played a significant role in increased calls to suicide-prevention hot lines -- and likely has led to increased suicide rates. While government statistics on suicides often lag by two or three years, experts say the easier-to-track calls to hot lines have grown significantly. The National Suicide Prevention Lifeline, which operates 24-hour crisis help lines around the country, reported an increase of 18 percent from January to May this year. The rates have ...

Suicides Now Claiming Nearly as Many Soldiers as Battlefield Deaths

Annual rates of suicide among American troops have been steadily rising since 2002, and are now so high that they rival the actual battlefield death toll. So far this year, 163 active and non-active soldiers have killed themselves. That's startlingly close to the number of troops lost fighting in Operation Enduring Freedom since January: 172. As NPR is reporting, the military is struggling to first investigate each death, and then make specific changes that will curb the suicide surge. In part, that's because each suicide is complex and personal, and always rooted in something ...

PostSecret Suicide Note Inspires Events in San Francisco and Australia

After a submission to the PostSecret website spurred an outpouring of support from thousands of Facebook users last week, other online communities are launching projects inspired by the incident. On June 7, a post card, whose author self-identified as an illegal immigrant, was published on PostSecret.com. "I am not wanted here. I don't belong anywhere. This summer I plan to jump off the Golden Gate," the card read. Within hours, over 20,000 people from around the world had joined a Facebook group, "Please Don't Jump," and written encouraging messages for the unknown writer behind the ...
