Phoenix Jones, Would-Be Superhero, Breaks Nose in Street Fight

Vigilante justice has its downsides. Phoenix Jones, the fledgling superhero Surge Desk reported on last week, has suffered something of a setback. Specifically, it involves his nose, which was broken in an altercation with two alleged criminals in Lynnwood, Wash., over the weekend. According to the New York Post, the rubber-suited, masked man known as Phoenix Jones was held at gunpoint by one of the men while the other broke his nose in a run-in with the stun-gun-carrying Jones. The masked crusader said he called 911 and put one of the men in a headlock, but the other man drew a gun. Alas, ...

Cops Arrest 'Spider-Man,' 'Captain America' and 'Poison Ivy' After Brawl

(Nov. 5) -- Even superheroes can turn out on the wrong side of the law. Police in Connecticut broke up a brawl among two men dressed like the superheroes Spider-Man and Captain America, and a woman wearing a costume modeled after the Batman villain Poison Ivy. The bizarre incident took place in a parking garage in Stamford early Halloween morning when Michael Sanchez, 25 -- who was wearing a Captain America costume -- got into a fight with a man who wasn't wearing a costume, police told StamfordAdvocate.com. ...

It's Up, Up and Oy Vey for 'Kosher Crusader'

(Aug. 2) -- Batman is known as the Caped Crusader, but a retired hairdresser from Philadelphia is praying that the world will one day recognize a hero known as "the Kosher Crusader." The hero in question is called Shaloman, and he may be the only superhero who is an openly observant Jew. The man behind the Hebrew hero is Al Wiesner, who has single-handedly written and drawn the comic book since 1988 after a lifetime of religious reflection. David Moye For years, Al Wiesner prayed for a Jewish superhero. Finally, in 1983, he created one of his own: Shaloman. "In 1938, when Superman came ...

Super Shrinks Psychoanalyze Superheroes

Super Shrinks Psychoanalyze Superheroes

SAN DIEGO (July 22) -- Being a superhero has its perks, but caped crusaders like Spider-Man and Batman also can suffer from some super-sized mental problems. However, as anyone who reads comic books knows, it's difficult for Spidey or the Caped Crusader to carve out time from their busy crime-fighting schedule to talk with a mental health expert. But three L.A.-based psychiatrists have come to the rescue, figuring that if they can't get the superheroes on the couch, they can at least give their fans some food for thought about mental health issues. Christopher John Pozios Psychiatric ...

Marvel Comics Apologizes for Offending Tea Partiers in 'Captain America' Story

Marvel Comics' "Captain America" -- about a superpatriot who fought Nazis in World War II and chased flag burners during the Vietnam War -- is one of the longest-running, best-loved comics in American history. But, Marvel recently apologized for having a story align too closely to the politics of the moment, Yahoo News reports. While infiltrating a right-wing, anti-government militia group known as the "Watchdogs," Captain America encounters mobs of what appear to be Tea Party protesters. In one scene, Captain America and his African-American sidekick, The Falcon, observe an anti-tax protest ...

Disney Princesses vs. Marvel Superheroines

Disney Princesses vs. Marvel Superheroines

Judith wonders whether the merger between Disney and Marvel is going to prompt a disruption in the universe -- an earthshaking twist in the plot line of each company, which leaves both never quite the same -- to which I can only reply: God, I hope so. Because, you see, it's time that Marvel's superheroines took a lesson from their doe-eyed sisters on refusing to be pushed to the sidelines of a story, and it's time that Disney's princesses embraced a bit of the spirit and complexity of their mask-wearing alter-egos. For the benefit of both. Marvel has been home to enough tough, complicated ...
