Auto Critics Getting Charged Up for Chevy Volt

Auto Critics Getting Charged Up for Chevy Volt

(Oct. 11) -- The Volt, Chevrolet's new quasi-electric car, doesn't go into production until Nov. 11. But some select journalists got a chance to test-drive the car early, and the first reviews are starting to crop up. The consensus seems to be that it works. The Volt is technically a hybrid, but unlike other hybrids, it can run for about 40 miles on an all-electric, rechargeable motor. But unlike, say, the Nissan Leaf, it also has a gasoline engine. It's being touted as a transition vehicle that can be practical for the commuter without being crippling for longer trips. The cost of the car ...

Sun Chips Trashes Super Noisy Compostable Bag, Silencing It Forever

Sun Chips Trashes Super Noisy Compostable Bag, Silencing It Forever

(Oct. 5) -- The reign of the Sun Chips "100 percent compostable" bag will end with a crinkle, not a deafening roar. Frito Lay's much-hyped green packaging hits the proverbial dust compost bin of history today due to a unusually rigid molecular structure that made the bag hilariously loud and, thus, unappealing to snackers (particularly those of the stealthy sort): The company will return to the original, non-biodegradable packaging for five of its six flavors but retain the crinkly compostable for the "original" flavor. In the meantime, it's back to the drawing board as they research how to ...

IBM's New City Sim is More Than Mere Child's Play

IBM's New City Sim is More Than Mere Child's Play

(Oct. 4) -- Budding urban designers may have been leveling neighborhoods and building fusion plants in Will Wright's famous "Sim City" series for 21 years now, but today, that genre gets serious with the launch of IBM's "CityOne." Check out the trailer: CityOne, like "Sim City," is designed to mimic the operation and development of a real-life city, except it aims to do so with much more accuracy, and its target isn't gamers with god complexes but real-life urban planners and civic leaders. In CityOne, players take an existing city and address a range of problems from water management to ...

Opinion: Who Is Biggest Environmentalist?

Opinion: Who Is Biggest Environmentalist?

(June 18) -- Sugar is the new health food. Apple is larger than Microsoft. And Wal-Mart is now the world's biggest environmentalist. Bet you didn't see that coming. It wasn't that long ago that Wal-Mart was a big and easy and almost daily target for environmental reporters. Leaders from Natural Resources Defense Council, Sierra Club and others pushed Wal-Mart to do what it could to cut its environmental footprint. And in 2005, Wal-Mart stopped defending its behavior and started changing the way it acted. Wal-Mart went green. At first, many were skeptical. That is a polite way of saying no ...

Texas House of God Goes Green

Texas House of God Goes Green

PLANO, Texas (June 1) -- When the new sanctuary of Christ United Methodist Church in this Dallas suburb opened for worship services, it didn't have that "new building" smell. That was by design -- an environmentally conscious design that involved choosing paints, adhesives and solvents for the sanctuary that don't emit the odors that compromise the air quality. Moreover, the $15 million sanctuary, with its low-flow toilets and sinks, waterless urinals and other energy-efficient features, is well on its way to becoming the first in the state to receive special certification for going green. ...

The Meat of the Matter: Less Is More

The Meat of the Matter: Less Is More

Mary, I agree with your assessment that we Americans (and citizens of other wealthy nations) are absolutely piggish when it comes to eating meat. And the arguments you cite as to why our dietary excesses are taking a toll on our bodies, our souls, our national health-care system, and our environment, are spot-on. Still, I have to be honest.I don't think I will ever stop eating meat. It's not that I can't live without another burger, or that I can't fight the occasional cravings I get for a juicy rib-eye or a grilled flank steak. I'm pretty sure I could live happily without any of those things. ...

A Bum Steer: Big Beef Throws Its Weight Around at Cal Poly

A Bum Steer: Big Beef Throws Its Weight Around at Cal Poly

Big Beef has a bone to pick with Michael Pollan. And who can blame it? After all, Pollan, a professor of journalism at University of California at Berkeley and a critic of industrial agriculture, almost got away with delivering a lecture last week to students at California Polytechnic State University in San Luis Obispo. How dare he?! Pollan had been invited by the university's Sustainable Agriculture Resource Consortium, a faculty-run group that works to make sure students are exposed to alternatives to conventional agricultural practices. Apparently Big Beef decided to get mad -- and get ...
